The sun shone on Goals Sheffield last Sunday (17th March) as the open-age five-a side teams fought out the four Divisional trophies. It was www.southyorkshireabilitycountsleague.com ‘s Divisional tournament, and the event didn’t disappoint the usual big crowds. There were 32 matches, goals galore, and a number of tense finishes to each league.
The Premier tournament was won by Barton Hull Vikings, whose successful campaign was described by Lady Jo Newby.
“ Setting off in the rain and cloud, Vikings were pleased to arrive at Sheffield to sunshine and blue skies for the Premier Cup competition, ” Jo told us. “ Up against teams from higher divisions Vikings were expecting a challenge to keep their seasons unbeaten streak intact, with a local derby against Inter Barton adding to the excitement!
” First game against Doncaster Titans showed Vikings what to expect next season in a close game. Vikings started strongly and good pressure by Andy set up Richard for an early goal. Vikings kept a good tempo, but Titans came back into it and good pressure from them forced an equaliser. The game looked to be heading for a draw until Connor strode forward and smashed in a great late winner, 2 – 1 to the Vikings. ”
“ Next up was the ‘ biggie, ‘ the derby versus Inter. Great respect was shown by both teams and a great game followed. Early efforts by Vikings were all saved by Aidan who was in great form. Then Inter got their chance, Callum for once was given some space and he made Vikings pay with a great finish to put Inter one up. Vikings had to step it up and made some attacking subs, but Aidan was not letting anything past…….until the last minute when Andy showed great individual skill to cut inside and equalise to end the game 1 – 1. ALL PLAYERS should be really proud of their efforts in what was a great game. ”
“ To the last game against Wath Stars Purple, with Vikings knowing a win would give them a chance of lifting the cup. An unusually slow start by Vikings saw Anthony having to make a couple of good saves but was beaten by a good effort which put Wath 1 – 0 up. Vikings had to up the game and Captain for the match Jason led by example striding forward to hit home an equaliser. With their tails up and following good work by Luke and Kai, Richard slotted home to make it 2 – 1. With players tiring, Connor, George and Andy were all brought on as substitutes. George and Jason back together in their rock like defensive partnership gave Connor and Andy the freedom to put the game beyond Wath, Andy assisting Connor and Connor assisting Andy to make the final score 4 – 1. ”
“ So Vikings had done all their work and knew that with seven points out of nine only rivals Inter could match that with a victory against Titans, unfortunately after a great game Inter fell just short losing 2 – 0 which meant the cup was Vikings! ”
“ Well done to all the Vikings who played great football with respect shown to all and ended the season with a well-deserved League and Cup Double!!!! ”

Club Doncaster Titans Blue pushed Barton Hull Vikings all the way, watched by Titan’s John Hibbert.
“ Our first game against Hull Vikings was well fought and end to end, with some really close battles. Really good saves from Ashley and we had chances – but in the end it finished 2 – 1 to Barton. Ian opened Titans’ day with a goal. ”
“ Our second game was against Wath Stars. This was a well-controlled game from Titans, as we dominated the game from the start, ending with a 2 – 0 win. 1 for Conner and 1 for Brads; well done guys – you played excellently all day. ”
“ Our last game against Barton Inter Bar was the same as they have been all season – end to end and we have had some close battles. However, today they seemed like a different team; our Blues knew they needed to win, and we did in some style.T hey had one player that scores most of their goals and Titans defence was solid, holding him up, pressuring him, which gave our attacking players chances on goal. It ended 2 – 0 with Conner scoring two great goals – well done. ”
“ We finished the cup games in 2nd place – you all deserved a pat on the back, so well done guys !”
“ I haven’t forgotten that PJ made his debut for the Blue team and played really well. A pat on the back mate, so well done to you. I look forward to seeing your progress next year in the league games mate
And the second debut for Phil (Siddons) who’s managed the team well today. Well done Phil; I’m very proud of you mate; you did well. ”
Players from every Premier club received Darren Warner Fairplay medals as a memento of the afternoon, presented by Match referee Brian and League Chairman Mike Stylianou, and Barton Hull Vikings took the trophy which is theirs to keep. Congratulations also to Titans Blue, Wath Stars Purple and Barton Inter Bar for a brilliant afternoon.
The Championship went to Mansfield Town after a 5-minute play off failed to separate them from Sheffield FC Purple. The clubs had drawn their regular trophy match, so the destiny of the Divisional Cup was decided by a tense spot-kick shootout.
All the takers kept their nerve, until Sheffield hit the bar and the shot stayed out. Mansfield despatched the winning penalty to take the glory after a thrilling competition.
Teams took their Darren Warner Fairplay medals from referee Sean and Chairman Mike before Mansfield collected the trophy to trigger wild celebrations. Well done to all our Championship teams for a great competition – the two play-off teams, Titans Ladies, Wath Stars Blue, Sheffield FC Purple and Derek Dooley White.
The League One title went to Bradford City Diamonds who saw off challenges from Mansfield Town, Bradford City Emeralds, Derek Dooley Blue and Bridge Pole All Stars to take the Trophy. Every player received their Darren Warner Fairplay medals from matchday referee Phil and Chairman Mike before Bradford Diamonds stepped up to take that well deserved Trophy!
It was Hillsborough Hornets Onyx who lifted the League 2 Trophy after a fun-filled, thrilling competition which saw Derek Dooley Green, Spartans and Club Doncaster Titans Yellow all play their part. In the end, Onyx’s two wins saw them over the line, and they were presented with the Trophy by match referee Tony and Chairman Mike, with every player receiving their souvenir medal.

Hornets Gold deserved Premier Champions after unbeaten season
Barton Hull Vikings see of Wath Purple in thrilling Championship battle
League One glory for Titans Ladies over Wath Stars Blue
Bradford City Emeralds clinch League Two title after perfect last day.
The curtain fell on the http://www.southyorkshireabilitycountsleague.com open-age 5-a-side season at the Goals Centre, Sheffield last Sunday 18th February. The weather played its part as the day was dry and sunny, allowing clubs from four divisions to resolve the destinations of the trophies and medals for season 2023/4.
We picked the bones out of the 29 matches with the help of our trusty match reporters.
In the Premier Division, Hillsborough Hornets Gold had been in brilliant form all season and got their afternoon off to a characteristic start with a good win over Mansfield Town on Pitch no. 8, with Sean as referee.
In the second game, Barton Inter Bar took on Club Doncaster Titans Blue, the match resulting in a goal-less draw.
“ This was an end to end game with some great passing and team work, ” Titans’ John Hibbert explained. “ Barton played well above their normal selves and held Titans Blue off with some good defensive work as we pushed on to them, creating chances. However, the game ended in a 0 – 0 draw. ”
It was a fast turnaround for Titans, who then took on the Champions-elect.
“ This game started well, and our tactics threw their team into some confusion as Titans held back and tried to catch them on the break, ” John Hibbert explained. “ This made Hillsborough commit more players forward than they would have liked. Jamie had a few chances and some long range efforts from Brad’s and Ian. The game ended in a 2 – 0 defeat: however, taking into account that Hornets are too good for this league and the improvements made by our players – last time out we lost 6 – 0 it was a great game lads. Well done! ”
Barton Inter Bar enjoyed a good win over Mansfield Town before Titans Blue rounded off their weekend with a win over Mansfield Town.
In our last game of the season, the game went more Titans way from the start, although Mansfield almost caught them out on the odd occasion towards the end of the game, ” Titans’ John explained. “ Brad’s midfield strike went in the left bottom corner giving their goal keeper no chance and a 1 – 0 victory for us. ”
“ A well-deserved finish to the season . All our players played superbly all day. Well done all to end our league campaign second and on a high! Congratulations guys – well done! ”

Congratulations to Hillsborough Hornets Gold who popped the alcohol-free champagne and unfurled a massive banner as they received their well-deserved trophies and medals from League Chairman Mike and President Colin. You can see the celebrations below. They have had a great season and are worthy winners. The only point dropped came in that final match with Barton.
Barton Inter Bar and Club Doncaster Titans Blue finished the season level on points and records, but by virtue of a superior head to head record, it’s Titans who take the runners up. Well done to both clubs, and to Mansfield Town who battled brilliantly all season.

Phil was on refereeing duty on Pitch 6, where the Championship adopted the short, one-half format to bring the season to a rousing finale.
Derek Dooley White got the afternoon under way against Sheffield FC Purple, watched by Dooley’s Claire Cowlishaw.
“ The team had a good start this morning as they had 6 players, as the team has struggled with less players for the last 2 match days, ” Claire explained. “ They started with a game against Sheffield, which was a tight affair for most of the game, but they lost to 2 good goals. The team showed some good defending from Jordan and good saves from Shaun. ”
Dooley stayed on the pitch for their second game with Wath Stars. “ There was no rest as Wath was next up, and they went down to an early goal, but kept fighting and managed to draw courtesy of a thunderous shot from Jordan, ” Claire reported. “ There were some good runs from Mo and Matt, but Luke couldn’t finish the shot. The lads kept going but they lost to a last minute goal. They had a rest before the next fixtures, with Barton up next. ”
Barton Hull Vikings got their season-long challenge off to a good start, beating Sheffield FC Purple.
“ The Vikings took a strong squad to Sheffield for the final weekend in the league,” Barton’s Lady Jo Newby and coach Geoff told us, “ With four games to play everyone was going to have to play lots of minutes. ”
“ In Match 1 against Sheffield, there was a strong start by the Vikings, but they were struggling to score, until Andy put on a good press to pinch the ball and finish well. With the final whistle approaching, a defensive mix up let Sheffield in for an equaliser. With a draw looking likely more good work by Andy, set up Dylan, who having a break from goal, slotted home to make it 2 – 1. Good defending by the Vikings saw them to the final whistle despite a good effort by Sheffield. ”

After Wath Stars Purple had taken all three points with a good win over Bradford City Diamonds, Barton were back on Pitch 6 to take on Derek Dooley White.
“ An untypical slow start by the Vikings saw them under pressure and Antony, making his debut today, made three outstanding saves to keep things level, ” Barton’s Lady Jo and coach Geoff reported. “ In a tight game a draw was looking likely until up stepped Connor and smashed a long range effort into the top corner leading to wild celebrations, the strike being enough for the Vikings to edge a tight game. ”
Dooley’s Claire was philosophical in defeat. “ Tom was solid in defence and Shaun saved them to a late goal in the game losing by a single goal. There was good play from Matt and Mo with some good runs, but shots saved. ”
Dooley rounded up a hectic afternoon with a fine win over Bradford City Diamonds.
“ The last game against Bradford saw Luke go in goal and Shaun go upfront, with Mo, ” Claire told us. “This was great game with Mo scoring a hat trick, which was amazing for his dad who had come to watch for the first time. There was a good goal from Matt and Shaun too, with solid defending from Jordan and Tom, with a good effort from Luke in goal. ”
After Wath Stars Purple had maintained their title challenge with a good three points against Sheffield FC Purple, Barton took on Bradford City looking for a third win of the day. Lady Jo and Geoff had kept a keen eye on the opponents.
“ With a 4 point lead at the start of the day, the pressure was being kept on Vikings as their challengers Wath had won their first three games of the day, however Vikings knew if they won against Bradford the title was theirs, ” Geoff summarised.
“ A change in ‘keeper saw Jason put the gloves on again which saw Antony take an outfield position. Bradford put in a really good defensive performance and Vikings were struggling to score until Andy made a good interception and put the ball away. Shortly after, Kai, who was a rock in defence all day, played a defence splitting pass to Antony, who calmly made it 2 – 0. With the pressure off a little, Antony then had a great run and cross to L, who took his time, picked his slot and finished tidily, cue the celebration of the day as L whipped off his shirt swinging it above his head doing a lap of the pitch, the goal sealing a 3 – 0 victory.”
Appropriately, it was Wath Stars Purple who were Barton Hull Vikings last opponents of the season, as the two had fought out a titanic battle throughout the season.

“ The battle of the top two ” Barton’s Geoff explained. “ Two good teams were both playing well and cancelling each other out until, out of the blue, a long range rocket from George was smashed into the top corner, this was followed by an own goal after great pressure by Charlie. This stirred Wath into action and direct from the kick-off a great long range strike made in 2 – 1. More pressure from Wath and a great solo effort saw them deservedly equalise. At 2 – 2 it could have gone any way and Wath had their confidence up and a deflected shot seemed to be finding its way into the corner until Antony came up with an absolutely amazing save to turn it onto the post and keep the score 2 – 2. This spurred the Vikings on again and Andy received the ball and scored a great goal to make it 3 – 2. More Vikings pressure followed but both defences stayed strong, and the final score ended 3 – 2 to the Vikings. ” What a game!!
Player Antony stood in today as GK in his league debut. “ My first appearance for Vikings playing first and second game as keeper, I really enjoyed all the support from friends and families who have come to watch us Vikings play, ” Antony explained. “ The 3rd game was intense, and the last game was even better. We have all come a long way as a team and we were able to get through to the finals and win; I am wanting to thank coaches Craig and Geoff and also Joe. Our captain Dylan did amazing I am proud of what we have achieved, and I will be turning up to every session and making it to games to help the team. ”
Sheffield FC Purple confirmed a well-deserved third place with a win over Bradford City Diamonds.
Well done to Barton Hull Vikings who unfurled a banner of their own as they received their Championship trophy and medals from referee Phil. They have had a great season, pushed all the way by an excellent Wath Stars team, so congratulations to both sides.
A huge round of applause to Bradford City Diamonds, Derek Dooley White and Sheffield FC Purple for contributing to a brilliant competition which went right to the last day.

Into League One, and an early start for League leaders Club Doncaster Titans Ladies who took on Bridge Pole All Stars on Pitch 2, referred by Brian. Titans’ Ladies brilliant Coach Steph Hall watched her team.
“ This was a good game played by both teams. Both teams started strongly creating many chances. Bridge Pole took the lead after a shot from long range. CDT continued pressing and creating chances, but Bridge Pole defended well. Nikita pulled CDT level after Sheridan did a good pass and Nikita finished well from a tight angle. CDT went into the lead when Kaz passed a ball through the middle to Nikita who turned and finished well from long range. The second half was much of the same with both teams pressing, creating chances and defending well. CDT scored again after some good passing between Nikita and Zee. Nikita did a good finish from close range. CDT lead was extended when Shauna scored a brilliant penalty. Near the end of the game CDT scored again when Nikita finished from close range after a good pass from Karen. In the end CDT Ladies won the game and all the players should be proud of how they played. ”
Next up, Derek Dooley Blue fought out a titanic battle with Wath Stars Blue.

“ Our team didn’t have a good start with going down 3 – 0 very quickly, but they didn’t let their heads go down, ” Dooley’s Claire explained. “ They kept on trying and Woody took the ball and scored so this spurred them on, some great defending from Cody sending the ball to Fallon who scored. Alistair took his turn being the solid defence and didn’t disappoint, with good saves from Ryan, Tanisha battled in the middle and was rewarded with a goal. After the break they got back to 3 – 3 with another great shot from Woody. Then they lost at the last minute with a good goal. After a lengthy break they were up against the top of the league, Doncaster Ladies. ”
Bridge Pole Allstars are emerging as one of the most entertaining teams to watch, and so it proved in their next game, a 4 – 2 win over Hillsborough Hornets Orange, then Wath Stars Blue shared the points after a thrilling draw with Mansfield Town.
By now confirmed as League One Champions, Steph’s Titans Ladies took on Claire’s battling Derek Dooley Blue. It was a cracking game-take Steph’s word for it !!
“ This was another good game played by both teams. Both teams created lots of chances, pressed well and defended well. CDT took the lead after some good passing between Nikita and Katie which ended with a good finish from Nikita. CDT then extended their lead when Kaz did a good pass through to Nikita who turned and scored. The second half was much of the same with both teams pressing and creating lots of chances. Derek Dooley got a goal back when they scored from close range. CDT came close by hitting the post and Derek Dooley goalkeeper making some brilliant saves. Kaz kept CDT in by pulling off some crucial saves to prevent an equaliser. The equaliser came near the end of the game when Derek Dooley scored from close range. In the end the game finished as a draw and the points were shared. ”
Dooley’s Claire saw the game the same way. “ This was a fiercely contested game with solid defending from Cody and Alistair and some good work upfront from Woody and Fallon. They went down to a good goal, but they stuck at it and were rewarded with an equaliser from Tanisha’s thunder shot. There were good battles in the middle of the pitch with Tanisha and Fallon, but they took the lead again. They kept trying and a lovely pass from Alistair to Woody who turned and scored, finishing a draw. Well done team!”
Mansfield Town rounded off their season with a good win over Hillsborough Hornets Onyx, clinching third place in the process, with Bridge Pole ending a great first season in fourth, just above Dooley Blue and Hornets Onyx.
What a tremendous battle between Wath Blue and Titans Ladies, but after a brilliant campaign, it’s Steph’s Ladies who took the honours, Trophy and medals. Well done Titans, and congratulations to Wath on a magnificent challenge.

Tony was on officiating duties all afternoon on Pitch 2, and in the early match, Spartans edged out Derek Dooley Green.
“ The Green League 2 team was depleted today with 4 players, so we started against Spartans who let us have a couple of players, ” Dooley’s Claire told us. “ The game was end to end and some great saves from Shane, not afraid to dive to save. There were some good runs up the wing from Archie who passed over for Stephen who scored. Spartans scored from kick off and we started again, there were some good shots from Paul against his own team! but he enjoyed the game. Stephen must have had his Weetabix this morning as he chased the ball down and took it up and scored. Bethany was solid in defence and stopped a few shots. Archie was running up and down the wing, with some great shots but hitting the post. Thoroughly enjoyable match for all that took part. ”

Titans Yellow beat Spartans in the next game, watched by Doncaster’s Liam Taylor. ”
“ Matt scored to make 1 – 0 Titans and Spartans scored to make 1 – 1 and Christian scored to make 2 – 1 Titans. Christian scored to make it 3 – 1 Titans, Paul made it 4 – 1 Titans and Barney scored to make it 5 – 1. Spartans scored to make it 5 – 2 ”
“A great team performance. Well done to everyone and well played to Spartans – they gave us a good game, ” was Liam’s verdict.
Titans stayed on field to face Derek Dooley Green. “ Derek Dooley scored to make it 1 – 0 and Christian scored to make 1 – 1, “ Liam told us. “ Derek Dooley made it 2 – 1 and Christian scored for 2 – 2 then Derek Dooley made it 3 – 2. ”
“ Unlucky everyone in this game but it was a great game to watch. We were so unlucky with hitting the post 3 times and I am really proud of you all!!”
Commenting on that same game, Dooley’s Claire reported “ Dooley Greens were next up against Doncaster and the 4 players gave 100% effort, Bethany stepping into goal and Shane up front and got himself a goal. Stephen was still running with the ball and Archie doing great on the wing, even coming back to defend and fetch the ball, he ran up the wing and shot and it went into the far corner, a stunning goal. They all kept going and Stephen dribbled past 2 players and scored again. Well done everyone!! ”
Champions-elect Bradford City Emeralds enjoyed a good win over Dooley Green in their first match of the day.

“ Our last game was against Bradford, the league leaders in which they put in the same effort but were getting tired now, ” Dooley’s Claire admitted. “ Shane in goal couldn’t stop a superb shot, they all kept on going with the same effort and Stephen managed to score. But the team were very strong, and Shane couldn’t stop the shots from going in. Tremendous effort from the 4 players today! Well done. “
Bradford City Emeralds marched on with a tremendous win over goal-hungry Spartans with the League title in sight, and they confirmed their silverware with a final win over Doncaster Titans Yellow.
Here’s Titans’ Liam Taylor. “Bradford scored to make it 1 – 0; Bradford scored again to make it 2 – 0 and Paul scored 2 – 1 “

“ We gave Bradford a game and I am really proud of how you all battled against a really strong Bradford team. ” Liam summed up. “ I want to congratulate all the Bradford team for winning the League and wish them good luck next season too. ”

A cracking season and deserved trophy for Bradford City Emeralds with just two losses in 15 games all season, although Liam’s Titans Yellow pushed them hard. Great seasons too from Spartans and Dooley Green who played their part in a brilliant season.
The Bradford and Titans team collected their trophy and medals from Chairman Mike.

The matches were watched by a host of reporters, so our Website editor Margaret Gregory had her hands full pulling together the best of the action – so we had best get cracking! Three matches and a friendly in the Premier Division, refereed by Phil on Pitch 8.
First up, a thrilling 2 – 2 draw between Club Doncaster Titans Blue and Barton Inclusive Inter Bar. Titans’ John Hibbert gave us his take on the match: –
“ The game started off with both teams pushing back and forth; however, with some really good footwork, Ian scored the opener for the Blues and some really wonderful defensive play from Kayden and Alwyne made Barton really struggle against us. Some excellent goal keeping skills from Ashley kept them out until almost half time when Ian slotted a great second goal. A quick response from Barton, so half time came at 2 – 1.
In the second half the game became end to end and,” John continued. “ Barton managed to gain the equaliser. Titans kept on trying until the end, so well done to all and a great game.
Our Man of the match went to Ashley. Well done mate – great performance. 2 – 2 ”
Sophie and Stu from Inter Bar gave their version of events: –
“ In the absence of Manager James, Stu took charge of Inter in yesterday’s South Yorkshire Ability Counts League fixtures, assisted by Graham & Rob. Inter’s first game was against Doncaster Blues. These two teams are on par with each other, and this showed throughout the game. It was end to end with both teams having chances and both keepers doing extremely well to keep the score 0 – 0; but it was Inter who managed to get the first goal with a lovely shot by striker Callum. Doncaster upped their game and after some great shots and saves they pulled level. Second half started as in the first half some great football by both sides. Doncaster took the lead with a quality goal off the boards. Inter kept pressing and eventually got their reward and Callum got the equaliser. That was how it stayed, this was a great game played in great spirits by both teams.
Next, Hillsborough Hornets Gold continued their march towards the title with a good win over Titans Blue.
Titan’s John Hibbert recalled an earlier meeting with Hornets and adjusted his side’s tactics. “ We set up to play for more defensive play rather than trying to play man for man, so the team opened up. With some good team work and some really great play Titans went in half time at just 2 – 0 down, ” John explained. “ Some great individual performances came in the second half and Hillsborough went on to two touch just minutes in the second half. Titans showed their resilience to stop more goals coming; Ian had some good chances and some good defensive play. Well done to all the team who showed no matter what the outcome you tried until the end.
Man of the match for the second game with some good defensive play was Alwyne – well done! You all played outstanding today guys. I’m proud of you all; well done back to training next week! ”
“ Barton Inter Bar’s second game was a friendly,” Sophie and Stu told us. “ Inter played Mansfield and although it was a friendly both teams again played in a very exciting game, end to end, Inter defended extremely well and Aiden was very commanding in goal. After Inter had swapped the team about and brought Rob on at the back who played very well, Inter took control of the game with Callum getting the first followed by a cracking goal from Charley. Second half and Inter made a change, Rob was replaced by Stu who was very commanding at the back. Mansfield had a few long range shots but Aiden was comfortable with them. Matt who came on for Callum then got a goal himself and then followed quickly by another by POTD Charley, another great game by both sides.
Congratulations to Charley on a well-deserved POTD, a player who shows the upmost respect and professionalism, on and off the pitch. Thank you. ”
Hornets Gold have a ten point lead with all clubs having played six matches. Titans Blue hold second place -just – from Barton Inter Bar, with Mansfield battling all the way in a tough division.

Into the Championship, and Dooley White lost their first game to the impressive Wath Stars Purple, with Brian in control on Pitch 6.
Dooley’s Claire Cowlishaw watched this game: –
“ The lads only had 4 players, so it was going to be hard. They started against Wath, who are a good team, with good intentions but soon were 2 – 0 down. They kept trying with some good runs from Mo. Wath scored again, but the lads kept trying and with good passing between Luke and Mo – and Tom with some good defending. Shaun did well in goal and in the second half they managed to score a couple back. ”
Next Bradford City Diamonds took on Barton Hull Vikings, watched by Bradford’s Paul Jubb: –
“ We lost our 1st game against top of the table Barton Inclusive FC 6 – 3, ” Paul told us. Despite an amazing performance from Mark Dalton in goal and the crossbar, posts & us finishing with 7 players on! 2 goals from Ian Loz and one from Liam Schofield. “
Viking’s Lady Jo Newby was pitch side for the same match: –
“ Barton Vikings first game was against a Bradford team who were definitely up for the challenge. A great start by both teams saw good play and plenty of efforts for both sides, the Bradford goalkeeper was inspired and was proving very hard to get past.
Vikings persevered with their high press and passing football and two quick goals scored by Connor and both brilliantly assisted by Richard saw them open up a two goal lead. Bradford kept going though and soon pulled a goal back before Richard added a goal to his assists and Connor completed his hat trick, allowing Bradford to introduce another player and immediately pull a goal back to make it 4 – 2. Vikings made a change and brought Charlie in for Richard who used his fresher legs to add two quick goals before Bradford added another to complete the scoring at 6 – 3. ”
After Wath Stars Purple had taken the three points after a 12-goal thriller with Mansfield Town, it was an historic occasion for Bradford City Diamonds which left Paul Jubb almost unable to contain himself.
“ We won a game! We won a game! Ha! Well done to Bradford City Diamonds today! ” Paul told us.
“ In our second game, we played against Derek Dooley who only had 4 players on the day, although they did beat us last time with 4. The team played really well working hard, eventually winning 6 – 3.
Ian scored 4 great goals all from different angles and Matthew Groves Hemingway scored the other 2, one of them from half way!
“ Today’s star player was Mark Dalton with some amazing saves! Well done! ”
Dooley’s Claire was philosophical after the game: –
“ Our Championship White team had a long break before the next game against Bradford. The lads had a move round and Luke had a go in the goal, they played well together but Bradford scored first. There was good defending from Tom and good runs from Mo. They were losing so Cody came on from the league 1 to help them out, they played better with 5 players, and all enjoyed themselves. ”
An excellent morning for Barton Hull Vikings was confirmed with a good win over Sheffield FC Purple watched by Lady Jo Newby: –
“ Second up for the Vikings was Sheffield and knowing they would be up for the game, Vikings knew they would have to be at their best, ” Jo reported.
“ A close game saw some well worked goals but also four great long range strikes from the Vikings, Connor adding four goals to his hat trick in the first game and Charlie also netting a hat trick. ”
“ Good pressing from the front by L, made it difficult for Sheffield and stand in keeper, and George kept Sheffield at bay to close out a 7 – 0 win that was hard on Sheffield. ”
Two really competitive games played by all three teams that were enjoyed by all spectators. ”
In a very competitive division, those two wins kept Barton Hull Vikings ahead of Wath Stars Purple after 8 games each. Vikings have 22 points and a 4-point lead, with Sheffield FC Purple on nine points and Dooley White on seven. Congratulations to Bradford City Diamonds on that fine first win.

League One’s matches, refereed by Sean on Pitch 2 got under way with a thrilling 3 – 3 draw between Mansfield Town and Bridge Pole Allstars.
Next, Wath Stars Blue took the three points with a win over Derek Dooley Blue, watched by Dooley’s Claire Cowlishaw: –
” The Blue team started well with some good passing between Fallon and Woody up front but the shot was saved. Some good saves from Ryan, good runs from Alistair on the wing and strong defending from Cody. The team played well but Wath took the lead; the blues kept going and there were some good shots from Woody. The team played well communicating with each other, they lost narrowly but the team were not down hearted.
They had a 5 minutes break before they were on against Hillsborough Hornets Onyx. The team carried on where they left the match before and some good passing and communicating and Woody shot and scored. Some good saves from Ryan and defending from Cody, Fallon worked tirelessly in midfield and Alistair on the wing, this was a really good match from them all and they won their first game of the season. Well done everyone! ”
Wath Stars Blue enjoyed a good win over relative newcomers, the battling Bridge Pole Allstars before Club Doncaster Titans Ladies were in action against Mansfield Town.
Titans’ Steph Hall covered the game for @SYorksACL.com: –
“ Our first match Mansfield vs CDT Ladies was a really good match played by both teams. It was end to end and both teams created lots of chances. Both goalkeepers did some brilliant saves and both teams defended well. Mansfield came very close to scoring on several occasions and CDT Ladies did the same, even hitting the post in the final few minutes of the game. The game finished as a draw which was the right result in the end. ”
The Ladies stayed on Pitch 2 for their next game, this time against Hillsborough Hornets Onyx.

“ This was another good match played by both teams, ” Steph told us. “ It was end to end and much closer than the previous match played against each other. Both teams created several chances within the first few minutes of the game. CDT ladies went ahead after the Hillsborough goalkeeper saved a shot and Nikita scored on the rebound. Soon after, CDT Ladies extended their lead when Kaz rolled the ball out to Nikita. Nikita controlled the ball, dribbled then scored from long range. Just before half time Hillsborough got a goal back by scoring from close range. The second half was much of the same, both teams continued to created chances. CDT Ladies took a chance and extended their lead by pressing from the front and unfortunately causing a Hillsborough player to score in their own net. CDT Ladies then scored again with Kaz finishing from close range. Hillsborough got themselves back into the game when they scored from close range after a good team passing move. CDT Ladies scored again when Kaz rolled the ball to Nikita who dribbled then scored from close range. Near the end CDT Ladies scored another after a good passing move, which ended after Nikita passed to Karen who did a good finish from close range. In the end CDT Ladies won the match but credit to both teams for playing a brilliantly contested game. “
It’s another fantastic division, with Club Doncaster Titans Ladies unbeaten in their 8 matches so far, and enjoying a narrow, four point cushion over the equally-impressive Wath Stars Blue. Mansfield Town have 12 points and are third, with Dooley Blue fourth, Bridge Pole Allstars fifth and Hornets Onyx just behind.

There were six games in League Two on Pitch 2, with Tony as referee. Derek Dooley Green edged a nine-goal thriller with the entertainers, Spartans FC, watched by Dooley’s Claire: –
“ A bonus for the Green team is that they had 5 players and a positive attitude so maybe the early kick off suited them,” Claire explained. “ They started against Spartans with Shane in goal and Bethany as the defender, Archie on the right and William upfront. They played well together, talking and passing to each other. Shane did a great diving save to his right and saved it, he then rolled the ball out to William who turned and scored, showing us his unique goal celebration. Archie had a good run on the right and passed to William in the middle and he scored again. Stephen did some good defending on the wing and ran the length of the pitch and passed to William to score. Spartans came back with a great shot past Shane bringing back level. The match went from end to end and was a fun match to watch. They had won their first game of the season, so everyone was happy with all players having given everything! ”
In the second match, Bradford Emeralds beat Spartans 3 -1, with two goals from Hashim and one from Carter, before Dooley Green and Titans Yellow shared the points after a 3 – 3 draw. “ Our second game was a good even match with Bethany going in goal and Shane in defence, “ Claire explained. “ Archie didn’t stop running and scored an amazing toe poke that flew into the goal. They all played well with lots of energy, but Doncaster were a good team and equalised at the last minute. Another good game and fair result. Great effort from everyone! ”
Steph Hall was delighted by the draw. “ Really good game and I am really proud of you all. The performance was good and some really good passing and moving. ”
A 5-1 win for Titans Yellow followed. Liam from Titans covered the timeline. “ Christian scored 1 – 0 and Spartans scored 1 – 1 and Christian scored to make 2 – 1 and Christian scored again to get his hat trick to make 3 – 1 and Christian scored to make 4 – 1 and Barney scored to make it 5 – 1 ”
Bradford City Emeralds took the points from their next game with Dooley Green with a 3 – 1 win. “ The last game was against Bradford who are a strong team, ” Claire admitted. “ Shane went in goal and Bethany showed her ace defending skills with lots of tackles. Some great passing between all the players but they couldn’t beat the top team. They all had given their all – and had a great morning of football. ”
In the final game, Bradford City Emeralds took three points with a good win over Club Doncaster Titans. Again Liam covered the game for www.southyorkshireabilitycountsleague.com “ Bradford scored to make 1 – 0 and Bradford made it 2 – 0 and Bradford made 3 – 0 and Bradford made 4 – 0 ”
“I am really proud of how you all battled against really tough Bradford team, “ Liam summed up.
The Bradford Emeralds coaching staff were also delighted, “ Fantastic effort from all the players, really good passing and players moving to different positions. Well done to all!! ” Jaimee told us.
It’s a close-fought battle between Bradford City Emeralds and Titans Yellow, with Emeralds holding a three point lead after 12 matches. Spartans have 10 points, and Dooley Green 7.

Action and goals galore in a thrilling afternoon across four divisions

Tight League One battle between Titans Yellow and Bradford City Emeralds
Sunday saw the last matchday of 2023 for the South Yorkshire Ability Counts League as the five-a-side teams brought the curtain down on the calendar year with another action-packed afternoon at Goals Centre Sheffield. There were 23 games across the four Leagues, all well supported by spectators, carers and families, and the changes to pitch allocations helped eliminate the congestion in walkways at the venue.
Our www.southyorkshireabilitycountsleague.com editor, Margaret Gregory put on her Santa outfit and dispatched her elves for one last time in 2023. Their mission-to bring our readers the best of the action. It was another fantastic day in our fundraising campaign in support of www.tchc.org.uk and their Ryegate Centre; a bucket collection raised £95, taking our total to over £2000. Thanks to everyone who has donated so far; there is still time to donate, with details of our Just Giving site available on the website.
So, to the action, and first up in the Premier League saw Club Doncaster Titans Blue take the three points with a good win over Mansfield Town on Pitch 6, under the watchful eye of Brian, our referee.
Titan’s John Hibbert watched the action for www.SYorksACL.com.
“ From the kick off Titans were all over Mansfield with high up field pressure from all the team,” John told us. “ The dominant team started off really well and by half time a goal from distance from Bradley followed by Ian opening his score sheet for the first time this season and the defence holding strong from Ashley meant half-time came at 2 – 0. The second half stayed the same. Mansfield pushed hard to level the score sheet which opened the pitch and Titans went up two more levels with more goals from Conner Brad’s and Ian. With Titans playing two touch and Mansfield having an extra man, Titans really played well passing the ball around and moving forward. The team really played well with a great performance from all and a clean sheet from Josh. Well done to you all!
It was a pleasure to watch and good to see. ”
Titans Blue stayed on Pitch 6 and took another win over Bradford City Claret. “ The second game started, ” John told us, “ with Titans playing well and Bradford starting the game strong, however giving away some fouls and in keeping the ball in the middle having a few shots from each side. The game play was fast paced from each side, however an opening came, and Conner put the Titans in front. By half time Conner scored a second 2 – 0 Titans. This had Bradford on the back foot and the Titans didn’t ease off piling on more pressure. This Bradford team has beaten Titans in the past; however, today Conner was on a mission scoring 2 more and another from Ian ending the game 5 – 0, and another clean sheet this time from Ashley – well done – making some lovely saves.”
“Both goal keepers Josh and Ashley really played well with some fantastic saves. The defensive play from Bradley, Josh and Ashley was excellent holding strong in both games and moving the ball forward for Conner and Ian to play up and score goals. ”
“ Well deserved – you all play fantastic football passing the ball around; you all played as one and it was a pleasure to watch. ”
“ Finally, to all have a good Christmas and New Year; see you in the new year for the second half of the season. ”
Barton Inter Bar took a close win over Mansfield Town, before Hillsborough Hornets Gold continued their fantastic season with two convincing wins over a brave Bradford City Claret and a battling Barton Inter Bar. A word for Barton’s keeper who made some brilliant saves.
“ Bradford City only had 5 players on the day, ” City’s Paul Jubb explained. “ They played Doncaster Titans in the first game and got beat 3 – 0, despite Toby making some amazing saves in goal. In our second game it was obvious what was going to happen, Hillsborough Hornets once again proved too strong for us and beat us 5 – 0. We had to finish the game early due to an injury to Toby in goal. Well done to Ben who gave 100% in both games and was our player of the day! ”
Hornets Gold have a perfect record going into the Festive period with six wins from six games. They lead Titans Blue by eight points, with Bradford City Claret a further point behind. Barton Inter Bar have six points, and Mansfield with just one point to show from their fantastic efforts.
Quick word for Titans’ Connor who had a quick picture taken after his goal-scoring exploits. See if you can find it in the gallery.

Into the Championship then, with six matches on Pitch 8 refereed by Sean. Barton Hull Vikings were first in action as they took on Derek Dooley White. Lady Jo Newby and Coaches Geoff and Craig reported.
“ Vikings started well against a strong Derek Dooley team, working really well for each other and keeping positions, ” Jo told us. “ Charlie scored early following really good work by Andy and that was followed by a cracking shot by Kai excellently saved by the Derek Dooley keeper, but the rebound fell to Andy to make it 2 – 0. ”
“ Good pressure in the second half forced an own goal following a great pass by Richard to make it 3 – 0. A strong finish by Derek Dooley saw two good long shots make it 3 – 2 and set up a nervous finish, but the rocks, George and Dylan helped hold on for a 3 – 2 win. ”
After Sheffield FC Purple had edged a thrilling game with Derek Dooley White by the odd goal in seven, Barton Hull Vikings were back in action against Wath Stars Junior Base Purple.
“ Vikings’ second match was another cracker against a really good skillful Wath team, ” Jo told us. “ A really tight game opened up when George fired in what already has to be Goal of the season, top corner from a long way out. Wath hit back immediately though with a screamer of their own, direct from the kick off. Approaching half time Vikings got another chance to score when a penalty was awarded. Up stepped George to score and give the Vikings a 2 – 1 half time lead. ”
“ After the break Wath equalised with a great individual goal, the player beating three Vikings before firing home. ”
“ The nerves were starting to show, but then up stepped Charlie, rested in the first half, to bag a couple with one nicely assisted by Kai. Wath kept coming though and following good pressure scored again to make it 4 – 3. Vikings wanted this win though and Charlie made no mistake when firing home a loose ball to complete his hat trick. Another cracking strike from Wath made for a nervous finish but the Vikings again held firm for the 5 – 4 win. ”
“All players were awesome today under the direction of coaches Geoff and Craig. They encouraged, communicated and really played as a team. We saw great attacking and pressing from Andy, Richard and Charlie and real defensive stability from Kai, George and Dylan. “
” George had a strong claim for Player of the day but was just pipped by Charlie due to his all around work effort and key hat trick.”
Sheffield FC Purple took the points with a fine win over Bradford City Diamonds, before Wath Stars took three points from a dominant performance against Derek Dooley White. In the final game, Dooley White beat the Battling Bradford City Diamonds by a single goal.
“ Another hard day for Bradford City DFC Diamonds again with only 5 players!, ” Bradford City’s Paul Jubb told us. “ Despite playing some great football at times, we lost 7 – 2 against Sheffield FC. Matthew Groves Hemingway & Liam Schofield scoring.
The 2nd game we was 4 – 1 down at half time against only 4 players!,
We got 3 goals back but lost the game 5 – 4 to Derek Dooley, who deserved the win.
Matthew Groves Hemingway Suhail Hussain and Liam all scoring. “
“ Well played Liam Schofield on his return back to league games – he was player of the day!”
The guys from Barton Hull Vikings sit on top of the Christmas tree and are unbeaten after their six games. Wath Stars Junior Base Purple are four points back, with Sheffield Purple on nine, and Dooley White on seven.
Finally, a word of advice to Sheffield Purple’s keeper – never leave a game early ! (Picture included in our gallery!

In League One, refereed by Phil on pitch 4, Derek Dooley Blue got the action underway with a thrilling 3 – 3 draw against Bridge Pole All Stars Blue. After a thrilling encounter between Mansfield Town and Dooley Blue, Wath Stars Blue edged Bridge Pole in a thrilling game. Club Doncaster Titans Ladies got their afternoon under way with a win over Mansfield Town, watched by Steph Hall.
“ This was a really good game played by both teams, ” Steph reported. “ It was end to end and a very tight game played in the right spirit. After some good play Ellie passed to Nikita who turned and finished from close range. Both teams continued to press, CDT pressed from the front, Nikita had a shot on goal which a defender passed back to the keeper and unfortunately, it went into the back of the net. The second half was much of the same with both teams creating many chances. CDT did some good play, Katie passed to Nikita who then did a brilliant finish to score. ”
“ Both teams continued pressing, CDT won the ball back deep in the Mansfield half. Ellie won the ball, passed to Nikita who scored after a good finish. Mansfield pressed and scored a goal after a good finish. CDT held on for the win after a very good game played by both teams. ”
After Wath Stars Junior Blue had won their last game with Hillsborough Hornets Onyx, the Hornets stayed on Pitch 4 to take on Club Doncaster Titan’s Ladies.
“ This was a good game played by both teams, ” Steph told www.southyorkshireabilitycountsleague.com “ CDT created many chances and quickly went a few goals ahead. Ellie scored two good goals after fantastic passes from Karen then Katie. Hillsborough did some good defending and their goalkeeper pulled off some fantastic saves to keep them in the game at half time. Just after the restart Sheridan scored from long range after a good pass from Ellie. Sheridan then scored from close range after a good pass from Katie. After some good team play, Katie passed to Sheridan who scored another from long range. Ellie scored from close range after a good pass from Kaz. Hillsborough continued to press and created some good chances. Sheridan scored another after a good pass from Kaz. Karen then got on the scoresheet after a good pass from Sheridan. Hillsborough’s resilience and pressure paid off when they scored a really good goal from close range. In the end CDT won the game. Really proud of the sportsmanship, respect and fair play shown by the team before, during and after the game. ”
Hillsborough Onyx’s management team took time out to congratulate Titan’s Ladies on their sporting attitude. “ We really appreciated how patient they were,” Sally told us.
Last word from Steph, “ I would like to wish everyone in the League a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year too. ”
In League One, Titans Ladies have a hundred percent record and lead Wath Stars Blue by six points, with Mansfield Town two further points back. New guys Bridge Pole are doing well with four points and are level with Hillsborough Onyx, with Dooley Blue just a further point back.

Six round robin games in League Two, with referee Tony in charge on Pitch 2. Titans Yellow got the action underway with a tight win over Derek Dooley Green and Liam Taylor watched the action unfold.
“ Titans scored make 1 – 0 and Derek Dooley scored to make 1 – 1, other goal from Derek Dooley to make 2 – 1 and a good goal from Paul to make 2 – 2, “ Liam told us. “ This game was a great game to play and I’m really proud of the performance from the lads you are all doing me proud.”
Liam then described his teams win over Bradford City Emeralds. “ It was an end to end start and a goal from Paul to make 1 – 0 Titans and an own goal from Bradford 2 – 0. Titans and good goal from Shaun made it 3 – 0 Titans. ”
“ Well played everyone and this game was the best performance. ”
The entertainers, Spartans, were a little depleted but took the win over Derek Dooley Green. After Bradford City Emeralds had edged Dooley Green to take the win, Titans Yellow and Spartans played out a thrilling game.
“ Matt scored to make it 1 – 0 Titans, ” Liam told us. ” Spartans scored to make it 1 – 1 and Spartans scored to make 2 – 1; Titans scored too with a goal from Paul to make it 2 – 2 and Barney scored to make it 3 – 2 Titans. ”
“Great performance for both teams and a friendly atmosphere and well played and well done to Spartans. ”
Somewhere in this game was a spectacular goal from Richard “Riccardo” from Spartans; but was it at the right end? See if you can find our action shot in the matchday gallery…”Bradford City Emeralds took a fine win in the final game with Spartans. ” The Emeralds only had 4 players, a really poor turn out, Hashim hit the post 6 times and the crossbar another 5 times against Doncaster Titans but they scored 4 at the other end and we lost 4 – 0, ” Bradford’s Paul Jubb explained.
“In the second game of the day Hashim put his shooting boots on and scored all 4 in a 4 – 2 win, and in the final game against the Spartans, Hashim again scored the goals! Although Simon did manage to get 1 too! ”
“Coach Stephen Haigh wasn’t happy with the 1st game, but was glad they managed to win the last 2 games, ” Paul added.
“ Merry Christmas to everyone in the League, even the dodgy referees! (Sean) ho ho ho!!!
Hopefully more of our players will come for all the teams in the New Year!!”
With all four teams having played nine games, it’s really tight at the top between Liam’s Titans Yellow and Bradford City Emeralds. There are just two points between the sides, with Spartans on ten points and Dooley Green with that one win.

Sunday 19th November 2023
It’s raining goals at Goals Sheffield!
Golden Hornets edging Bradford City Claret in the Premier League
Barton Vikings by a nose from Wath Purple in the Championship
Titans (Ladies) out in front from Mansfield in League One
Bradford City Emeralds-just- from Titans Yellows in League One.
Just the 22 South Yorkshire Ability Counts League 5-a-side matches last Sunday at Goals Centre Sheffield. It was a wet and dismal day, but for the spectators and families surrounding the four pitches, the on-field action more than compensated for the inclement weather.
Wetter than usual duties for our courageous match reporters; so, after wringing out their notepads, our guys did the usual stunning job of summarising the action for our website. www.southyorkshireabilitycountsleague.com
Win and a draw for Inter Barton in SYACL 5-a-side Premier Division.
Apologies from http://www.southyorkshireabilitycountsleague.com; one of our intrepid editorial
staff forgot to post the following report from Barton Inclusive. The member of staff has been
reprimanded and docked his matchday apple!
Any road up, Inter Barton’s Coach Stu watched his side’s two Premier Division games last
Sunday. “ Inter was back in action in the South Yorkshire Ability League. The weather was very wet
and rained throughout,” Stu explained. “ Our first game was against Mansfield, and it was a
great game to watch both teams playing some excellent football, both keepers in great form
keeping the score to 0 – 0. Scotty at the back for Inter Barton was outstanding, as everybody
expected a deserved draw, Inter Barton’s striker popped up and scored the winner. ”

Inter Barton coach, Stu instructs his players
“ Onto the second game and Inter Barton was playing Doncaster. Again a great game, end to
end football, but Doncaster capitalised on their possession and scored 2 goals in the first half.
Onto the second half and Inter Barton pressed the Doncaster team and after many great saves
by the Doncaster goalkeeper, Callum for Inter Barton popped up again to grab one back. As
inter pressed for an equaliser, Doncaster caught Barton on the break and after a brilliant save
by the keeper, Doncaster was awarded a penalty as the momentum of the save and the wet
ground caused the keeper to slide out of the area. Doncaster scored the resulting kick, but Barton was
not finished yet and after more pressing, Joel for Barton scored a wonderful goal. The game finished 3 –
2 to Doncaster. ”
“Credit to both teams for another entertaining game! ”
Five matches in the Premier Division, and after Barton Inclusive Inter Bar had taken three points with a win over Mansfield Town Ability Counts on Pitch 6, with Phil refereeing the action, Club Doncaster Titans Blue took on League Leaders Hillsborough Hornets Gold, watched by Titans’ John Hibbert.
In game one versus Hillsborough Hornets, Titans played well from the start, but the Hornets played strong attacking football,” John admitted. “ Our Blue team dug deep and ended up facing a difficult hard team. Titans worked very hard on their defensive play along with some lovely saves from Ashley – well done to you. Some excellent stops from Alwyne and also Malcolm keeping them from getting through to goal; Conner had a couple of chances and Jamie running all over the pitch trying to get the ball, kept them from scoring for a short while. However, with the Hornets playing as if they were in a different league we were only 4 – 0 down at half time. Well done guys for keeping your heads up.”
“ The second half was much the same, even after adding to our numbers,” John continued. “ Titans started to battle hard and started to get used to the physicality on the pitch. With this in mind and the fact that the other team had some good efforts on goals the game ended 8 – 0 to Hornets. Well done Blues you played well; you adapted to the game situation and started passing the ball around more and in true Titans fashion, didn’t argue between us or pick fault with each other. You all put in great shift and worked well together as a team.”
“ Well done. The game was very difficult, well done to you all.”
Next up, Bradford City Claret took the points with a convincing win over Mansfield Town, watched by City’s coach Danny.
“I would like to say a big well done to the adult 5-a-side Clarets today!” said Danny. “Bradford City DFC Clarets beat Mansfield won 7-2 with goals coming from Charlie, Lucas and Ben, who all got two each, and Jack scored the other.”
Next on pitch four was a cracking game between Barton Inclusive Inter Bar and Club Doncaster Titans Blue. The match featured two outstanding goalkeeping performances and was watched by Titan’s John Hibbert.
Our game with Barton started end to end and with some great passing and in under 2 minutes Conner put the Blues in front with a cracking goal, playing around one player and put right in the corner of the net 1 – 0 ; the game continued to be end to end stuff and just before half time Jamie scored his first goal. Conner shot, it bounced off the back board and Jamie with the follow up meant that their goalkeeper didn’t stand a chance; 2 – 0 at half time. “
“ In the second half Titans kicked off and in under a minute had two shots on goal with some great saves on their keepers behalf, ” John continued. “ Titans really started to get hold of the game and pressed higher up the field, but after a lucky bounce Barton managed to score to make it 2 – 1. ”
“However, Titans higher pressure didn’t stop, and Ian had some good chances on goal hitting the post twice and their keeper saving one. We pressed on, piling on the pressure from all fronts. The Titans really started to show how talented a team they are and some great passing and one-two’s flowing; a quick pass from Alwyne up the line to Conner. Conner moved fast to a one on one with the keeper 3 – 1. ”
“ It was one to watch; a good game all round and after the first match the Blue’s really did brush themselves off, regrouped and carried on – well done guys! ”
“ It was a pleasure to coach you all today guys – you showed some real talent and played some really great football. “
In the final game of the day, Hornets Gold came out on top after a feisty clash with Bradford Claret. “Bradford City lost 4 – 1,” Bradford coach Danny told us. “ Our goal came from a Lucas free kick. Well done everyone – our Player of the day was Toby who made some amazing saves throughout the day.”

” Special mention to Rosie who scored her first Hornets goal on Sunday! “
With all the clubs having played four games, Hornets Gold have a one hundred per cent record and lead the table by three points from Bradford City Claret. Titans Blue have four points, Barton Inter Bar three and Mansfield Town one.

There were four games in the Championship. In the first of these, Sheffield Purple edged past Wath Stars Base United Purple before Barton Inclusive Hull Vikings took to Pitch 5 and took the points with a solid win over Bradford City Diamonds.
“ Vikings travelled to Sheffield hoping to follow up on a pleasing start last month,” Barton coaches Jo and Geoff told http://www.southyorkshireabilitycountsleague.com. “It was clear that all the teams were going to be battling the weather too, grey skies, wind and constant drizzle adding to the challenge.”
“For our first game with Bradford City Diamonds, squad rotation mixed it up a bit this week and saw Connor start in defence; he accepted the challenge and got the Vikings off to a quick start when he stepped out of defence with the ball and put a strong shot away. This was followed by his defensive partner Jason and a cracker by L making it 3 – 0 to the Vikings, allowing Bradford to bring in an extra player. Vikings continued to press but found the Bradford keeper in great form before Charlie managed to put one past him following up a rebound to make it 4 – 0 at half time. “
” Bradford started strongly in the second half and quickly put an effort in the top corner just after half time before a good finish from Alex restored the advantage. Bradford made their extra player count towards the end as they pulled a goal back, but the Vikings stayed strong to hold on to a 5-2 victory. ”
Bradford’s Paul Jubb watched the same game and gave his view of the action.
“After going 3 – 0 down in the 1st five minutes, and bringing an extra player on, the Diamonds got back into the game with 2 great goals from Tim Fawthrop. In the second half Barton came back stronger and scored another 2 goals to deservedly win 5 – 2. “
A quick turnaround for Barton Vikings who stayed on the pitch with another win, this time over Sheffield FC Purple. Jo and Geoff reported on this game for our website.

“ In match 2 against Sheffield FC, Andy and George had points to prove after starting as subs in the first game and quickly made their point, each with a great assist for Charlie to score twice. Jason was again an attacking force as he scored for the second game in a row to make it 3 – 0 and again allow the opposition to bring on a sixth player. The Vikings carried on their pressing though and Andy got a goal he had worked so hard for before a well worked free kick by Sheffield got it back to 4 – 1. “
” With an attacking formation on the pitch, Connor again took control and hit a top corner effort to make it 5 – 1, bringing on a seventh opponent. Two good goals by Sheffield made it a worrying last few minutes, but again the teamwork from the Vikings helped them see out a 5 – 3 victory. “
“Two great games by all sets of players and the referee, (hats off to Dennis) made harder by the wet weather,” Geoff summed up.
In the last game of the day in the Championship, Paul Jubb watched his Bradford City Diamonds side take on Wath Stars Base United Purple.
” Wath scored first, but Tim scored again; only for Wath to score again to make it 2 – 1. Matthew Groves Hemingway got 1 back to make it 2 – 2 at half time,” Paul told us. “Wath proved too strong again scoring another 5 goals but a great free kick from Donell and a great team goal coming from Matty were consolation goals. Our Player of the day was Tim Fawthrop with some great goals. ”

“Well done everyone for giving your best, this is the strongest championship ever!”
Paul is spot-on with his assessment. It is a strong league, which Barton Vikings lead with ten points, just ahead of Wath Stars Purple with nine. Dooley White have four points, and Sheffield Purple have three, with the plucky Bradford Diamonds pushing hard for that first win.

A busy day in League One with seven games. In the first, Derek Dooley Blue just fell short in a close battle with Bridge Pole Allstars, watched by Claire Cowlishaw for Dooley.
“ Our Blue 5 a-side team played the new team Bridge Pole first and it was a great even game with Bridge Pole taking the lead after Paul hit the post twice,” Claire told us. “The effort from all the players was great with superb defending from Cody. Great saves from Ryan who, unfortunately stepped out of the area giving them a penalty, however Ryan saved it. Alistair had a great run up the wing, passed over to Paul in the centre and scored to bring it back level 3 – 3. With the last kick of the game Ryan missed a shot and they lost narrowly but they weren’t downhearted. ”
“ After just 5 minutes rest and they were up against the Hornets Onyx,” Claire went on. “This was another even game with some great work by Fallon up the wing to Paul, who scored. Tanisha worked well in midfield and solid defending from Cody while Ryan did well in goal trying not to throw himself on the floor to injure himself again. Alistair grew in confidence with his runs and took the ball up the wing and scored. The team worked well together, and the game ended a 4 – 4 draw – so well done everyone! ”
After Mansfield Town Ability Counts had taken three points with a win over Bridge Pole, Club Doncaster Titans Ladies joined the action against Wath Stars Blue.
“This was a good, close game played by both teams. CDT Ladies started on top creating lots of chances, but the goalkeeper did some brilliant saves to keep the score level,” Titans Ladies Steph Hall told us. “CDT Ladies pressed from the front, and this paid off when the pressure forced Wath to score an own goal to put CDT Ladies ahead. Both teams continued to create chances and Wath scored an equaliser. This game stayed close, both goalkeepers did some brilliant saves to keep their teams in the game and chances continued to be created. Just before half time CDT Ladies went into the lead. Ellie did a brilliant pass to Nikita who scored from close range. The second half was much of the same, but the score line remained the same and CDT Ladies held on for the win. The ladies should be very proud with how they played as a team and have really developed over the last few games. ”
After Hillsborough Hornets Onyx had edged a seven-goal thriller with Bridge Pole Allstars, Wath Stars Base United beat Mansfield Town Ability Counts, leaving the stage clear for Club Doncaster Titans Ladies to round off the action with a good win over an exhausted, but really brave Bridge Pole team. Here’s Steph Hall from Titans reporting.
“ This was a good game played by both teams. CDT Ladies started strongly and scored several goals in quick succession, ” Steph reported. “ Nikita scored from close range after a good pass through the middle from Sheridan. Nikita and Sheridan then both scored on the rebound after shots were blocked by defenders. ”
“Both teams created chances but then CDT Ladies scored two more before halftime. These came from Nikita who scored twice after two great passes from Sheridan. In the second half both teams continued pushing for goals with both goalkeepers doing some brilliant saves to keep the other team out. CDT Ladies scored again with Ellie scoring her first goal for the club after a great pass from Karen. With less than a minute remaining Bridge Pole Allstars pressure paid off when they scored a good goal from close range. ”
“In the end CDT Ladies won the game but Bridge Pole Allstars should be proud of their performance. Bridge Pole Allstars are a new team, but they really tried hard and worked well as a team, ” Steph summed up.
“This game really showed how far CDT Ladies have come on and developed as a team. ”
It’s Titans Ladies who are top of the tree after four wins and a one hundred percent record. They are one win, and three points clear of Mansfield Town, who are in turn three clear of Wath Blue. Hornets Onyx continue to improve with four points, and it’s a big congratulations to Bridge Pole on a great start with that win. Dooley Blue continue to work hard and won’t be far away at season end.
Great work too from Sean, our referee.

Six round-robin games in League Two and in the first, it was a close win for Titans Yellow over Spartans, watched by Liam Taylor.
“ In game one, Matt scored to make it 1 – 0 to Titans. Spartans scored to make 1 – 1 and a goal from Christian made it 2 – 1 Titans. It was an end to end game and Titans held for a 2 – 1 win and I’m really happy with how you all played. ”
Next up, Bradford Emeralds won the first of their two games beating Derek Dooley Green. Stephen Haigh, Emeralds Assistant coach told us, ” awful weather – fast rain; but we still played strong. We won against Derek Dooley 6 – 5, lost to Doncaster 5 – 3 and drew with Spartan 4 – 4. Hashim scored all 12 goals, but our player of the day was our hard working goalkeeper Jane Jowett. ”
A depleted Derek Dooley Green had a tough afternoon too. “On a very wet Sunday afternoon they had 3 friendly matches with a depleted team,” Claire Cowlishaw admitted. ” William, Bethany, Shane and Stephen had help from their friend Shaun in goal. They played well with lots of goals scored from William and Shane and even Stephen scored this afternoon. They played Bradford, Doncaster and Spartans with a big effort from all the players, lots of passing and skills from William. Well done! ”
So, Club Doncaster Titans enjoyed that win over Bradford City Diamonds. “ Paul scored to make 1 – 0 Titans, ” Liam Taylor told us. “ Bradford scored to make it 1 – 1 and Titans scored with Christian 2 – 1 and Barney scored to make 3 – 1. Another from Barney to make it 4 – 1 and then Bradford scored two quick goals to make it 4 – 3. A great save from Brad and then on the counter attack Paul from Titans scored to make it 5 – 3. ”
“What a performance from all the lads – and I’m really proud of all of you. ”
“ In our last game with Derek Dooley Green, Paul scored to make it 1 – 0 and Barney scored making it 2 – 0 Titans,” Liam told us. “ Derek Dooley scored to make it 2 – 1 and Shaun scored to make it 3 – 1 and Paul scored again to make it 4 – 1. “
“ What a performance; some great passing and movement and I’m really proud of how you all played! ”
” A round of applause too for Tony, our match referee. “
With the dust settled, it’s Bradford City Emeralds who lead the way, but by a single point from Titans Yellow. Spartans are pushing hard with seven points, and the brave Dooley Green team have three.

Five a side teams get seasons under way at Goals Sheffield
Bradford (Claret) and Hornets (Gold) set the pace in the Premier Division
Barton (Vikings) and Dooley (White) start well in the Championship.
Titans (Ladies) and Mansfield Town share League One lead
Fast start for Bradford City (Emeralds ) in League Two.
On a chilly but sunny afternoon at the Goals Centre, Sheffield, The South Yorkshire Ability Counts League’s 5-a-side teams played out 21 fixtures across four divisions as they got their competitive seasons under way. The usual excellent support from parents and carers were also in great voice as they got behind their players.
Match photographs are at the end of the piece.
For those who couldn’t make it, don’t worry. At huge expense, our www.southyorkshireabilitycountsleague.com editor Margaret Gregory dispatched her army of match reporters, complete with borrowed pens and fag packets, to bring you a sense of what unfolded during the afternoon.
There’s also a word of thanks to our superb team of referees – Sean, Brian, Phil and Tony – who kept the show on the road throughout the afternoon.
First up in the Premier Division came a clash between Barton Inclusive Inter Bar and Hillsborough Hornets Gold on Pitch 6, with Hornets taking all three points in a hard-fought encounter. Hornets then powered past Mansfield Town with a convincing win, with new signing Max scoring twice as Hornets put down a solid marker for the season ahead.
Sophie from Barton reported: – “Inter Barton started their season off at ‘Sheffield Goals’ with the hope of another great and entertaining campaign. They started the game with quite a lot of new faces, they welcomed Ben, Alex, and Aiden to the team.
Aiden took on the role of goalkeeper as Stu the regular keeper has retired from that position through injury.
First game was against Hillsborough Hornets who were a very well drilled side whose smooth passing football put pressure on Inter right from the start keeping the Inter keeper very busy and it didn’t take long before they were 1-0 up, then with only a minute before half time doubled their lead.
Second half Inter got a lot tighter to the opposition players and made it harder for them to pass the ball about; and then Inter managed to get one back with Callum placing the ball past the keeper, to make it 2 – 1 and a very interesting game.
After some great saves by the debutant keeper Hillsborough grabbed a third goal and it ended 3 – 1 to Hillsborough.
Credit to Inter they battled to the end against a very good footballing side who will be very difficult to beat this season.”

Barton then took on Bradford City Claret, and it was the team from West Yorkshire who sealed the win with the only goal of a close battle.
Second game Inter came up against Bradford and this was a very even game with both teams having some good chances, but were kept at bay by two very good goalkeepers, however it was Bradford who broke the deadlock with the only goal of the game, and that’s how it finished 1 – 0 to Bradford.
Both games were played in very good spirits.
Club Doncaster Titans (Blue) got their afternoon under way against Mansfield Town Ability Counts, and the teams served up a real thriller. Titans John Hibbert described the action for www.SYorksACL.com;
“From the kick off Titans played straight into their half and within a minute were 1 – 0 up after a one two off the wall, Jamie passing it back for Brad to open the score,” John told us. “The high pressing carried the Titans forward and before long Conner passed the ball backwards to the middle of the pitch for Jamie to run onto; however, Brad got their first with a shoot rebound. Jamie’s attempt bounced back towards Conner in the middle to make it 2 – 0. Two up at the half way point the match seemed to be all Titans way but a last minute mistake from Mansfield and a short pass with Alwyn’s pass through the right side to Conner ran past the Mansfield player and popped himself a goal 3 – 0 at the half way point.”
“However, Mansfield started to played better football and the game went from being one sided in Titans favour to end to end as Mansfield gained confidence.”
“ In the second half again, Titans started well as Mansfield piled on the pressure with blocks from Malcolm and Alwyn keeping them at bay,“ John continued, “and the Titans movement was still pushing them on the break, but with two goals the Mansfield team seemed to be gaining more momentum. Titans held the pressure really well most of the second half; the game seemed to be at a stalemate and in the end the game finished as a 3 – 3 draw.
The Titans Blues played really amazing- well done all!“
It was a quick turnaround for Titans (Blues) who were straight back into action against Bradford City (Claret). It turned out to be an absolute thriller, as John Hibbert explained.
“Titans started well, and the game seemed very close with some good battles on the pitch and every player holding their own, matching man for man,” John reported. “However, after a few minutes Titans opened the score with a brilliant roll out from our keeper and a little flick from Jamie; Brad’s shot hit the back board and landed well for Jamie to grab his first goal of the season 1 – 0 to Titans. Bradford started to play a harder and more physical game and soon got a goal 1 – 1. After a few more opening exchanges the Titans were playing hard and fast football, but Bradford soon gained a second 2 – 1 to Bradford.”
“Then Malcolm’s long pass to Conner, who jigged to the left, and Titans were all level again 2 – 2. After half time the game got even more physical and a pass from Kayden to Brad made it 3 – 2 to Titans. A fast game pulling the Bradford team apart in their half and a mistake from their goalkeeper gave Conner his 2nd of the game 4 – 2 to Titans. The Titans took some knocks and soon the score line was levelled up at 4 – 4. It was a fast-paced game, from end to end, and the game got more and more physical with Alwyn holding his own and Brad taking a hit on his foot from being trodden on “ HOPE YOU ARE OK MATE.“
“Bradford gained a second wave and soon become the dominant team towards the end with Titans holding on and pushing back of the break. Bradford somehow got a 5th and a last minute 6th, with the final score line being to 6 – 4 Bradford City.”
“Titans played really amazing and well done to all for your hard work, I hope everyone enjoyed themselves.”
So, with each team having played twice, it’s Bradford City Claret and Hornets Gold setting the pace with two wins each. Titans (Blue) and Mansfield have a point each, and Barton will be keen to get off the mark at our next five matchday.

So, on to the five games in the Championship, and Derek Dooley White got the action under way on Pitch 5 with a thrilling win over Sheffield FC (Purple). Dooley’s Claire Cowlishaw summed up the win.
“The team started off the season with a positive performance with new player Matt who moved up a league,” Claire explained. “The lads all played well together with lots of communication. The first game against Sheffield was an even, competitive match with us taking the lead from goals from Tom and Mo. The game was end to end and Sheffield pulled one back, but heads didn’t go down and Luke scored and then the lads took the foot off and Sheffield came back but it finished 4 – 3.”
Sheffield’s Kevin Marsh was disappointed. “We lost the first game against Derek Dooley Whites 4 – 3. The lads just didn’t get going in the game.”
Promoted Barton Inclusive Hull Vikings started their campaign against Wath Stars (Purple). Barton’s Geoff Warren described a thrilling start for their team;
“As BIFC Vikings enter the new season it was fair to say we were expecting a step up in opposition. From the first kick it was clear to see this was true.”
“In the first games against Wath Stars, the Vikings made a strong start and got their rewards through a great goal by Connor and two goals by Andy. This allowed Wath to bring on a 6th player. It didn’t stop the Vikings pressure and just before half time a penalty gave them the chance to extend the lead further. One person was clear, he was taking this, and up stepped George to make it 4 – 0, the first half still had time for a Dylan penalty save after a soft penalty award.”
“At half time the opponents brought on a 7th player. The extra players put the Vikings under pressure and Wath pulled two back before a cracker from L and two by Charlie stretched the lead before another three Wath goals had it finish 7 – 5. A great effort by all especially our team in the second half against 7 players.”
In the third game in the Division, it was a fantastic turnaround from Sheffield (Purple) who defeated Bradford City Diamonds. Kevin Marsh from Sheffield Fc was delighted;
“In our second game the players were completely different against Bradford City Diamonds. They chased and closed the Bradford players down; they did everything I asked of them, and it paid off in the end by winning the game 5 – 2.” Kevin told us. “ It could have been a bigger score – we hit the post and bar and had other chances.”
Next, Barton Inclusive Hull Vikings took on Derek Dooley White in a real battle. Here’s Barton’s Geoff Warren;
“The second game was against a much bigger physical side in the Derek Dooley Academy. A really strong start found the keeper in really good form before Charlie beat him to make it 1 – 0 at half time. George then hit the post with a long range effort before the opposition got a lucky equaliser. Andy put the Vikings ahead again and it looked like a second victory of the day until a late deflection earned the opposition a second equaliser and a draw.”
After the second match, the ref pulled Geoff to one side to ask him to tell the team that it had been a pleasure to ref them today, they had played good football but showed the opposition and the ref great respect throughout. In addition to this was feedback from some of the supporters as to the great atmosphere and the players really forming a team and encouraging each other.
Making his league debut, Andy was slightly surprised at the number of people there and the noise made by them, but put this to one side and put in two excellent performance including three goals to pick up player of the day.
Special thanks to all friends and family who provided great support to the team, which they all found really encouraging.”
Dooley’s Claire Cowlishaw agreed that it had been a tough game for both sides. “ The second game against Barton was a much closer and harder game. The lads showed some good passing and Shaun did some good saves, they took the lead with a goal from Mo. Barton came back to equalise and then took the lead. The lads didn’t give up and Tom came back on and scored a cracking goal to bring it to finish 2 – 2. Thanks to Matt for being top coach and lost property monitor!”
Wath Stars took an impressive win over Bradford City Diamonds to round off the Championship action.
When the dust had settled, the league standings were as follows, with Barton Vikings and Dooley White sharing top spot, with Sheffield (Purple) and Wath Stars (Purple) just a point behind. Don’t write off Bradford City Diamonds in what promises to be a hugely competitive Division.

The first match in League One took place on Pitch 4 and was a thriller between Dooley Blue and Mansfield Town. Claire from Dooley watched the action unfold.
“Nathan took charge of the Blue team with only 5 players,” Claire told us. “They had no subs so a hard afternoon for them all and Ryan in goal with an injured shoulder. New player Alistair settled into the heart of defence and Paul in attack, who has moved up from League 2, they settled in with Cody and Fallon. There was a good shot from Woody to take the lead, but it didn’t last long Mansfield scored to equalise. It was end to end with shots at both ends and finished with a close loss 3 – 2”
Wath Stars Base United (Blue) took the plaudits in the next game with a good win over Hornets new Onyx side; Onyx stayed on and were beaten by Mansfield in a tough encounter, before Club Doncaster Titans (Ladies) took on Dooley (Blue). Titans’ Steph Hall watched the action for @SYorksACL.com; “ This was a good game played by both teams,” Steph explained. “ It was end to end but CDT were on top. CDT took the lead after some good play. Steph received the ball, passed to Sheridan who scored from a close distance. CDT scored again after Kaz rolled the ball to Sheridan who sprinted up the pitch and scored a brilliant goal from long range. Derek Dooley pulled one back after some good passing between their team. CDT got another just before half-time when Kaz rolled the ball out to Nikita, who then scored a brilliant long range effort. The second half was similar with the teams creating lots of chances but both goalkeepers doing some brilliant saves to keep their teams in the game. CDT scored again after Shauna passed to Nikita who then scored from close range. Derek Dooley pulled another back with a good long range goal. CDT then scored a brilliant team goal after some good passing, Karen passed to Nikita who did a good finish. CDT scored again after Nikita won the ball, passed to Karen who was free, Karen received the ball and scored a brilliant one touch finish from close range. Both teams continued creating chances, but CDT held on for the win. Fantastic game and performance by CDT Ladies who worked brilliantly as a team!”
Claire from Derek Dooley summed up the same game. “Our Blue team had a long break before the next game against Doncaster Ladies, but they started well with great defending from Alistair and Cody. Fallon was solid in midfield and Woody kept trying and eventually scored, this lead didn’t last long they went down 2 – 1. They kept the momentum going but the ladies took a commanding lead 5 – 2. Well done to all the players for a great effort!”
With Nikita in clinical form at one end and Kaz as safe as houses at the other, Titans (Ladies) had a short gap before facing Wath Stars base United (Blue). Here’s Steph again;
“This was another end to end game. CDT were on top from the start creating many chances. Against the run of play Wath Stars went ahead. CDT pulled one back through a brilliant close range free kick from Nikita. Sheridan then scored to put CDT in the lead after a good pass from Nikita. Wath Stars then equalised just before half time. The second half continued to be end to end, with both goalkeepers doing some brilliant saves to keep their teams in the game. CDT went ahead again after Nikita passed to Sheridan who scored from close range. CDT sealed the win after Nikita scored a penalty in the last few minutes of the game.”
“ Fantastic game and performance by CDT Ladies who should be very proud of themselves.”
Great starts from Club Doncaster Titans and Mansfield Town, who share the League One lead with six points each. Wath Blue have 3, and Dooley Blue and Hornets Onyx will be looking to open their account in the next round of fixtures.

“Spartans scored to make it 1 – 0 and Titans scored to make 1 -1 with a goal from Matt B. Then Spartans scored to make 2 – 1 and Spartans scored again to make 3 – 1 and then Titans scored with a goal from Paul to make 3 – 2.”
“An entertaining game and it was an end to end game too, and we battled on. We had some great chances and were unlucky in this game, but some great team work too and I am very proud of you all.”
Claire Cowlishaw summed up the day for Derek Dooley (Green). “ This team were excited to start the new season with new player William raring to go and scoring on his debut. Archie made many runs up and down the wing passing into the centre. Bethany did a good job in goal with many saves and Shane was consistent in the middle. Ben was solid in defence and when substituted Doncaster scored. Stephen had run up the wing but was saved. Doncaster took the lead, but they didn’t give up.
The second game was against Spartans with all players on, they all put in 100% some good passing from all players, they had lots of chances that were saved or went wide. Shane managed to score past the great goalkeeper, this boosted the team, and they kept passing to each other with some good runs and Ben scored from a great shot. The team were solid and put in some great effort all over the pitch. They had a short rest before the last game against Bradford. All the players were ready and started strong with Archie on the wing and Ben strong in defence, Stephen on the right wing, William and Shane up front, Bradford were stronger and took a commanding lead of 2 – 0, Bethany made some good saves and Shane got 1 back. They kept trying and Archie had a shot and scored his first goal for the team, the whole team celebrated.”
“ Well done everyone !”
With a win and a draw for the ever-entertaining Spartans, it’s the 100% three-win Bradford City Emeralds who are first out of the blocks with nine points. All of the other clubs in the Division have three.
