Aston Swallownest FC

David Gill, Captain of Aston Swallownest

SYACL: Tell us a little about yourselves, what position you play, who you play for, and how you got into football?

As Captain for Aston Swallownest I play in defence. I have been into football since my Dad first took me to Bramall Lane when I was little. I have played in the disability football Leagues since I was 18 playing for Grimsby Town DFC and Rotherham United DFC before joining Aston Swallownest.

SYACL: What do you enjoy most about playing for Aston Swallownest?

I enjoy having a laugh with the lads at training and as one of the older players in the team leading by example on the pitch. I also enjoy playing for one of my old school mates James Scally. I used to run the school football clubs he joined in, so it feels like we have swapped roles now!!

SYACL: What’s your favourite thing about playing matches in the South Yorkshire Ability Counts League?

I am extremely competitive; so, I enjoy competing in the League and playing to win.

SYACL: Who is your favourite football team?

Sheffield United, I have been a season ticket holder since I was about 5.

SYACL: Who is your favourite player? Why do you like him?

As a Sheffield United fan, I am going to say Phil Jagielka. When he was at United the first time, I used to get loads of people saying I looked a bit like him so I used to copy his hairstyles all the time.

SYACL: What would you say to someone who wants to play in the matches but is a little shy or nervous about joining a team?

As I have been playing disability football for 15 years, I remember how daunting it was playing in a League with older lads. I’d say come down, join in, give it your best and enjoy it; at the end of the day we all play because we love football.

SYACL: How well do you think your team will do this season?

With the right attitude from the lads I think we can win the League. As Captain of the team I make sure to remind the lads that no game is easy, but if we are at our best in every game, then we could get promoted this season.
