Rearranged SYACL 7-a-side matchday doesn’t disappoint

Aston Swallownest Red and Sheffield FC Blue lead Premier League

Perfect Mansfield Town Blue are Championship front-runners

Hundred per cent Hornets Gold head up League One

Sunday saw the second round of www.southyorkshireabilitycountsleague.com fixtures at Concord Sports Centre, brought forward from November’s date because of the Sheffield derby.

By the end of the weekend, Club Doncaster Titans had revisited their decision to add another 7-a-side team at the beginning of the season and have decided to withdraw their Green team from The Championship. As a result, all their results so far have been expunged, which explains the unusual appearance of the Championship table.

Aston Swallownest Blue fielded a suspended player in their first League One match against Club Doncaster Titans Red. As a result, the points were awarded to Titans Red.

Club managers and coaches are reminded of the importance of checking either the Whole Game System or with their County FA Discipline Teams if they are in any doubt about the eligibility of any of their participants. If in doubt, do not select the player in question.

So to the football, described by www.syorksacl.com website editor Margaret Gregory and her flock of match side reporters.

In the Premier Division, Aston Swallownest Red enjoyed a good win over Rotherham United Community Sports Trust and shared the points in a goalless stalemate with co-leaders Sheffield FC Red. Sheffield Blue took the points in their derby clash with Sheffield Red, who had a win of their own over Club Doncaster Titans White.

As a result, Aston Red and Sheffield FC Blue are joint leaders on ten points, with Titans White, Rotherham United and Sheffield FC Red all on three points.

In the Championship, Titans Green shared a goalless draw with Wheatley Wanderers. Although the match turned out to be meaningless, John Hibbert, the Titans coach, was pleased with the outcome.

“ So we came with a plan to put a good fight up this time, so we were holding our own, ” John told us. “ Devon hit the post a few times, but we played well, and we drew 0-0 ”

Chris Pow from Wheatley felt his team had shaded the match. “ We pretty much outplayed the Titans today, but their keeper had a blinder. One time Sean was breaking through when one of their players cynically brought him down which warranted a card I thought. We had plenty of chances and shots, and our keeper didn’t have much to do, but the day wasn’t with us. ”

Mansfield Town Blue enjoyed a good win before Dooley Red took on Wheatley.

“ This game was good even match with some good passing and communication between the players especially Jack with running up and hitting from outside of box and going in, ” Dooley’s Claire Cowlishaw told us.

“ Nathan made some great saves  to keep a clean sheet. Some solid defending from Richard & Adam & Dom, and Brad kept going with some good passing up to Elliott. ”

Wheatley’s Chris Pow also watched the game. “ A good, tough game against the Dooleys with an end to end feel about it. Their goal looked like a deflection that spun through our defence into the net. We came close several times and feel we lost a point here. One memorable moment was Pete, our keeper, making a terrific save as a free kick came through all the bodies in the box. ”

“ Player of the day was Ian Drabble, who put in a strong performance. Thanks Colin for today. A lot better from us than last week. ”

In the next match on Pitch Two, Sheffield FC White took three points from Titans Green, with the result later chalked off. “ In the second Titans v Sheffield, we played really well, ” John Hibbert explained. “ We battled well till they scored then we started to be a little disjointed, so we lost 2-0 “

“ Moving forward we need to train together and work with each other, so we know how we work together and learn to gel together. Yes, there are a few things we need to work on, mainly team work and communication; so everyone on the training ground next week but overall better than last time, at least we didn’t lose both like last time. This time we took a draw and a loss, so well done today Greens – a good day at office. ”

In the final game of the day, Dooley Red went down to an impressive Mansfield Town Blue, watched by Claire Cowlishaw. “This Mansfield was a stronger side which the lads kept going with some great play with some good shots, but the goalie wasn’t letting any pass. The lads kept going but were beaten by the better side. ”

After taking away previous results associated with Derek Dooley Green, Mansfield Town lead the table with a one hundred per cent record. Sheffield White have six, and Dooley Red three.

League standings;

1Mansfield Town A.C Blue330039
2Sheffield White320116
3Derek Dooley F.A Red3102-13
4Wheatley Wanderers3003-30

Six matches in League One, with Titans Red taking the three points in that default win over Aston Blue before Dooley Orange took three points again by default.

Dooley’s Nathan Pearson explains, “ it was agreed by both teams to make this a friendly game to promote everyone playing football together. There was some great team work and communication from Derek Dooley and some very well taken goals from Jamie, Aiden and Believe. There was some great defending and saves from all the defenders and goalkeeper Dave. Jon and Gregg (1st half), Nathan (2nd half) helped out Doncaster with Jon and Nathan both scoring. ”

Hornets Gold got their day under way with a good win over Mansfield Town Amber, then Aston Blue got their day back on track with a fine victory over Glossop North End in a fine game.

Hornets Gold took on Dooley Orange in the penultimate match of the afternoon.

“ A very tough game against a great Hillsborough Hornets side, ” Nathan Pearson reported. “ All of the Derek Dooley players played really well as a team and showed real hard work in this game. In the second half the possession was much improved and teamwork too, some amazing running from Aiden and some great defending from Warren and Jon with Dave’s great goalkeeping. “

Mansfield Town Amber took three points in their final game of the day against a plucky Glossop North End.

Hornets Gold lead the way in League One with a perfect record, ahead of Dooley Orange and Mansfield Town Amber who have nine, next up are Swallownest Blue with three, Titans Red with three and Glossop not far away from their first point.

SYorksACL 7-a-side Competition under way at Concord

Aston Red and Sheffield Blue make fast starts in Premier Division

Mansfield Blue and Sheffield White lead the Championship

It’s a three-way log-jam at the top of League One

It was the usual action-packed afternoon of www.southyorkshireabilitycountsleague.com football as the 7-a-side competition got under way at Concord Sports Centre Sheffield with all of our teams desperate to get off to a winning start.

As usual, www.syacl.com had eyes and ears everywhere, so our website editor Margaret Gregory was able to put together the best of the action. Margaret hasn’t been enjoying the best of health recently, so everyone at the S Yorks ACL sends their best wishes and thanks for all the work she does.

In the Premier Division, there were 5 matches. In the first, Aston Swallownest Red took the points with a hard fought win over Sheffield FC Red before Sheffield FC Blue edged Club Doncaster Titans White by 3-2.

Rotherham United Community Sports Trust got their season off to a good start with a tight win by the only goal over Sheffield Red, before Aston Red rounded off a sparkling start with a convincing win over Titans White.

In the final match of the afternoon on Pitch 3, it was Sheffield FC Blue who drew level on points with Aston with a clinical win over Rotherham United CUST.

So, after the first round of fixtures, the Division is shaping up  to be a highly competitive one. Aston Red and Sheffield Red lead into the first corner, with Rotherham third and Titans White and Sheffield Red desperate to open their account.

Table after the first matchday;

1Aston Swallownest Red220026
2Sheffield FC Blue220026
3Rotherham United C.S Trust210103
4C.D Titans White2002-20
5Sheffield FC Red2002-20

In the Championship, Derek Dooley Football Academy got off to a fine start with a good win over a battling Club Doncaster Titans Green, watched by Dooley coach Claire Cowlishaw.

“ The first game back for the Reds this season and they showed good teamwork and fitness with good goals from Jack, 2 from Brad and with a first goal ever for Richard. They ended up 4-1 winners against Doncaster. ”

Doncaster Titans Green coach John Hibbert also watched the game. ” We started strongly, but they scored first, ” John explained. “ Then we got one back; we were holding our own but then Callum got injured and was struggling; eventually he had to go off because the pain was so bad. ”

“ Derek Dooley capitalized on this and scored again. “

In the second game, Mansfield Town Blue made a strong start to their campaign with a win over Wheatley Wanderers. Wheatley skipper Chris Pow told http://www.SYorksACL.com “ Mansfield were a very good team today, but we didn’t play our best. Chris blocked a shot with his arm and conceded a penalty which Mansfield scored, and Sean tried clearing a shot off the line unsuccessfully. Mansfield were a tricky outfit and caught us napping a couple of times, as well as scoring some good goals too. ”

“ Pete in goal saved it from being even more embarrassing, and Natalie gave a strong performance. ”

In their second game, Derek Dooley Red lost by the only goal to Sheffield FC White.

“ The second game was a little harder with some good play with Elliott bringing a ball down from long ball up front and shot wide. The team kept going with strong defending and good goalkeeping from Nathan but with the last kick saw a deflected shot go past Nathan. ”

In game 4, Titans Green ended up on the wrong end of the fast-starting Mansfield Blue.

“ We started well but Mansfield were very organised and started to get a foothold in the game and scored, ” John Hibbert told us. “ Then Callum started to struggle, and we started making mistakes in the game. We are a new team, so it was an adjustment. We all put 100% in, but my man of the match was Ryan who really stepped up. ”

“ Thank you Ryan I know you were worried, you had six  players in front of you; we have things to work on, but I’m very proud of every player today. ”

“ Heads up- we go again! ”

The final game of the day on Pitch 2 saw Sheffield FC White edge Wheatley Wanderers in an entertaining battle.

“ This was a much better game from us, but Sheffield went ahead first, ” Wheatley’s Chris Pow explained. “ In the second half we came out stronger and Brad set up Steven for a dribble and goal. Sheffield scored a good goal, and we kept at them to the final whistle.

New lads Ian and Bradley put in good games by doing the difficult stuff well. ”

“ Wheatley’s Man of the Day was Brad Gregory. ”

After two games apiece, the table reflects the fast starts made by Mansfield Blue and Sheffield White, who have maximum points. Dooley Red are a fine third, and Titan’s Green and Wheatley showed enough on the first afternoon to suggest that this will be another competitive division.

2Sheffield White220026
3Derek Dooley F.A Red210103

So to League One and six matches on Pitch 1. In the first, Dooley Orange and Glossop North End fought out a thrilling game, watched by Dooley’s Claire Cowlishaw.

“ The team started off with a full squad for the first game but unfortunately Warren sustained an injury in warm up so he couldn’t take part, so he used his coaching skills from the sidelines. ” Claire told us. “ The team – with some new players – showed some great passing and communication skills, using the skills learnt in training. Aiden did some good tackles in midfield to win the ball and pass up to Believe who scored. Dave showed off his goalkeeping skills with some great saves to keep the lead. John and Nathan were solid at the back with some good shots from Gregg. Matt and Jack worked well together and Believe kept going upfront.  Jamielee went upfront and got on the end of a pass and scored, they finished 2-1 in a good even game.

It was a quick turnaround for Dooley Orange, but they maintained their strong start with a single goal win over Aston Swallownest Blue.

“ The second game was harder which needed some stoic defending from John and Nathan and Dave, ” Claire admitted. “ Believe took down a long ball, took it to the side, and  scored. The team worked well together and thanks to Dave, in goal, to start the first games of season with 2 wins. Well done everyone!

Mansfield Town Amber took three points with a good win over Titans Red before Hillsborough Hornets Gol) made a stunning start to life in the seven-a side competition with a great win  over the battling Glossop North End.

Mansfield took another good win over Aston Blue before Hornets kept their foot firmly on the accelerator with a second win over Titans Red.

After two matches each, Dooley Orange, Hornets Gold and Mansfield Amber are joint leaders after a really impressive first matchday.

Next up, the adult 5-a-side teams get their seasons under way at Goals Sheffield next Sunday and www.southyorkshireabilitycountsleague.com will be there to bring you the best of the action.

Juniors and Sevens bring SYorks ACL curtain down for 2023/24

The League welcomes our girl players for the first time at seven-a-side level

Bradford edge Hornets to the U-16 Premier title on penalties in the Juniors Divisional

Bantams win U-16 Championship; Sheffield take both Under-12 titles

Sheffield FC Red and Mansfield Town (x2) claim the trophies in the Sevens Divisional

Glossop North End Sevens popular Darren Warner Fairplay Shield winners 2023/24

South Yorkshire Ability Counts seasons are a little like Christmas lunches; you get together with lots of friends, have a great time, then it’s over almost as soon as it began. All that’s left is the washing up, a medal for all our players, Divisional trophies for the deserved winners on the day and a lot of fantastic memories.

So it was at Goals Doncaster on Sunday 7th April and Concord Sports Centre on Sunday 14th, where the Juniors and Seven-a side teams respectively played round-robin league fixtures in the chase for the final trophies of the season.

Both were amazing days, with pictures following on our website. See if you can spot yourself – or your teammates.

As always, our website editor Margaret Gregory made sense of both days and sorted out the picture galleries, so as always, a massive thanks to our Margaret!

So to the action, and there were the usual big crowds for the Juniors action in Doncaster – ask anyone looking for a car parking space. The youngsters were all fantastically-well supported by parents, carers and friends, with referees Sean, Brian, Chairman Mike, Tony and Dennis keeping the action flowing.

The action got under way at 12.30, watched by coach Chris from Barton Inclusive.

“ On a typical South Yorkshire April day we ventured to Doncaster to take part in the SYACL cup. After a quick swapping of our first 2 fixtures as half the Bradford team were still on the A1, our first game was against Hillsborough Hornets. A slice of fortune to begin with saw us take the lead through an own goal, before HH equalised. We defended resolutely with James, Tom and GK Harvey repelling all HH could throw at us, but with Brandon and Bailey leading our attacks, we were devastating on the counter, with Brandon slotting home the winner – our first time defeating HH. ”

“ Game 2 against the eventual very deserved winners Bradford, was even until Bradford scored, we caused Paul Jubb’s boys problems with Lennon, who cleverly found space every time we got the ball and was unlucky not to score. With time running out we had to push forward, so primary defenders Kasper and Elliot played with more attacking intention, but a super long range strike put us 2 down. We still piled forward, and with virtually the last kick of the game, Tom got his name on the scoresheet, so it finished 2-1. ”

“Game 3 against Sheffield FC was a close game, end to end. Sheffield went 1 – 0 up but Bailey levelled before we nearly snatched the win at the death but ended up all square 1 – 1. “

” Game 4 with Rotherham was a fairly even game with a Bailey brace ensuring the points went to us with a 2 – 1 win. ”

“ Game 5 against Mansfield saw Brandon give us the lead before Mansfield equalised with neither team able to get a winner. ”

“ Our player of the day was awarded to James: he’s one of our smallest players but doesn’t shy away from a tackle even from a six footer in the opposing team! ”

The final words of the Barton match report go to Lady Jo.

“ I want to say on behalf of all our players, their families, the coaches at BIFC Hull and myself I want to express our massive gratitude to Colin, Mike, Paul and everyone who puts so much work into making this League happen. We are so grateful to have this safe haven to play in and can’t thank the League, the  refs, our worthy opponents and their coaches enough for our second tremendous season within SYACL. ”

“ Thank you all so much, we can’t wait to start again in the autumn. ”

After five games for each team, it was impossible to split Hillsborough Hornets from Bradford City Amber, so the match went to a 4-minute play off which saw Bradford snatch the win and the Trophy.

Players from the other teams – Barton Hull, Sheffield FC Blue, Rotherham United CST and Mansfield Town all received their medals from referee Sean, Chairman Mike and Welfare Officer Andrew.

The Under-16’s Championship Trophy went to Bradford City Blue from Titans White and Hornets Black with Mansfield Town White, Sheffield FC Black and Chesterfield all taking medals home.

Special mention to John Woverson from Chesterfield for his excellent goal on the day.

Sheffield FC Red were the big winners in the Under-12 Premier Division, and the Under-12’s Championship was won by Sheffield FC White to bring the season to a thrilling end.

Once again, every participant took away a commemorative medal.

The medals celebrate the life and achievement of League Co-Founder Darren Warner from Club Doncaster Titans. Darren and Chair Mike were responsible for taking on and developing the South Yorkshire Ability Counts League, and each year we take a moment to reflect on what Darren and Mike have given to disability footballers from Under-12’s to Open-age.

There was another opportunity to celebrate Darren’s life and work a week later at Concord Sports Centre when the Seven-a side adult teams fought out the three Divisional Trophies.

Glossop North End, a popular addition to our League this season were deserved winners of the seven-a-side League’s Darren Warner Fairplay Shield, selected by our referees as the club best reflecting the League’s ethos of Respect and Fair Play.

Appropriately, Chair Mike presented the Shield to Glossop’s coach Garry. The club were delighted and plan to display the Shield in their new Clubhouse. A great day for Glossop was made even more special with a win and a draw in their Divisional games, including a goal for Josh (JJ) on his birthday. Their players also took home their commemorative medals so their regular McDonalds stop at Tankersley will have been even more tasty than usual. Well done guys!

It was a significant moment for the www.southyorkshireabilitycountsleague.com when three of our lady players stepped up to seven-a-side level for the very first time.

Leah from Hillsborough Hornets, Natalie from Wheatley Wanderers and Sophie from Mansfield Town Amber all made the move from five-a-side level, and all had brilliant afternoons for their clubs.

The League had already planned a trial at this level for the Divisional Trophies and we were all delighted to see the girls in action at every level of the competition. Fantastic news!!

In the Premier Divisional Trophy, Sheffield FC took the Trophy with two wins and a draw. The most crucial win came over their Sheffield Blue rivals, with Rotherham United and Titans White all on the scoreboard. Sheffield Red skipper Liam took the trophy from Chairman Mike, with every player receiving a medal.

In the Championship, it was glory for Mansfield Town FC Amber – and a winner’s medal for Sophie – with four wins and a draw to see off Wheatley’s two wins. Wheatley’s Chris Pow summed up his side’s four matches, which featured Sophie.

“ Against Mansfield Town Blue we started slowly and paid the price. Our defence was put under pressure from balls over the top and some slick passing. We had a few chances, but Mansfield were the better team. We then lost to Sheffield FC White, but we could have had something from this game as we had shots on Sheffield’s goal. They were more clinical though. ”

“ In our win over Derek Dooley Red, Steven scored first before Ryan let fly with a cracking shot into the top corner. Our appetite was up, ready for the last game, in which we beat Bradford City Amber 4 – 1. Sean scored first with a good goal, then Steven got one from close range. Sean got another before Bradford got one back. Justin, who had a brilliant day, finished the tally. ”

“ Thanks to the League for everything you do – we had a great day! “

In League One, Hillsborough Hornets, including Leah, were making their first appearance at 7-a-side level, and coach Alex led his team to a great afternoon; setting them up nicely for next season, with three wins. Ultimately, though, it was Mansfield Town Amber who took the trophy with four wins and a draw, ahead of Dooley Orange, Aston Blue, Titans Red and Glossop North End.

So the floodlights fade on another brilliant season. Thanks again to The SYorks ACL Committee – Mike, Paul, Andrew, Tony, Sean and Margaret; our referees, all our coaches, parents, carers and our brilliant players, and our fabulous venues – Goals Sheffield, Goals Doncaster and Concord Sports Centre.

Have a great summer and see you all next season!.

Curtain falls on 7-a-side season at Concord Sports Centre

Sheffield Red take the silverware in the Premier Division

It’s Club Doncaster Titans White in  slide-rule conclusion to the Championship.

Glory – and champagne – for Wheatley Wanderers in League One

The www.southyorkshireabilitycountsleague.com reached the final day of the open-age seven-a-side competition last Sunday at Concord Sports Centre, with the Champions and Runners-Up in all three Divisions confirmed. Mind you, the League Committee had to dig out their slide rules and calculators to determine the outcome of a thrilling Championship division, as you’ll read shortly.

As always, our website editor, pulled together the best of the action from a decisive day for the seven-a-side clubs.

It was bite-size football in both the Premier Division and in League One.

The Premier Division, refereed by Sean on Pitch One, played 12 minute round robin fixtures with no half-time, which made for some thrilling matches. In the first of ten fixtures, Aston Swallownest Red edged Rotherham United Community Sports Trust before Aston went down to Champions-elect Sheffield FC Red. After Rotherham United had beaten Sheffield FC Blue, thanks to a brilliant finish from striker Gary, the two Sheffield FC clubs, Red and Blue shared a full-blooded goalless draw.

Next, Barton Athletic and Aston Red shared a goalless stalemate, before Barton stayed on Pitch 1 to snatch a late winner over Rotherham United with Barton’s Jamie Dunlin grabbing the winner from close range.

Rotherham and Sheffield FC Red battled out a nil-nil draw before Sheffield FC Blue took all three points with a win over Aston Red.

It had been a tough afternoon for Barton, reduced to just six players, and they seemed to run out of steam in their final two games, not helped by a red card in their loss to Sheffield FC Blue.

Appropriately, it was Sheffield FC Red who brought the regular season to a close with a win over Barton. Their captain, Liam, lifted the trophy on behalf of his teammates as they clinched the title by a margin of twelve points over their housemates, Sheffield FC Blue who collected their well-earned runners-up medals.

Aston Red finished third on14 points after a really good season, level on points with Barton Inclusive Barton Athletic who’s strong challenge ran out of road on that last afternoon. Rotherham United enjoyed a good season too, with two good wins.

Routine fixtures in the Championship, then, and an enthralling finish to a hugely exciting season. The matches were refereed by Brain on Pitch Two.

In the first match, Glossop North End played out a thrilling match with Derek Dooley Red, just coming up short in a 3 – 2 defeat.

Next, Mansfield Town, very much in the title race, enjoyed a fine win over Bradford City Amber before title-chasers Sheffield FC White edged Derek Dooley Red by a single goal.

Club Doncaster Titans White, also right in the mix, defeated Glossop North End in a super game, marked by a first competitive goal from Glossop’s Joe, who coolly slotted home a late penalty to the delight of both teams. Thanks to Titans for being such great sports, and to their keeper, who had a wonderful game until Joe stepped up.

Here’s Titans’ Dan Hall on the game: –

“ Going into this game was a bit of fun for Glossop because they knew, unfortunately, they have been relegated, ” Dan explained. “ It was a close one with both teams until Danny Grubb opened an account for Titans 1 – 0. Into the 2nd half Liam Wood scored a 2nd – what a goal – and then Connor got a 3rd. We then held back for Glossop striker who scored a goal to make his day, ending 3 – 1 to Titans. ”

More pictures of Joe’s moment of glory in our picture gallery!

Sheffield FC White laid down a title marker with a good win over a battling Bradford City Amber which set the stage for a decisive last match between Mansfield Town and Titans White. Despite both sides going for the win – and desperate not to lose – the match ended in a goalless draw.

“ It was a strong battle between both teams end to end action, 50 – 50 from both teams this was a title decider, but no team could break the deadlock with the game ending 0 – 0 ” Dan Hall told us. “ Mansfield, CDT and Sheffield FC finished on 22 points each, so there was no presentation for the Championship. ”

Dan had summed up the situation perfectly, leaving the League Committee to review the outcome on Sunday evening.

This was the League’s statement later on Monday morning.

“Sheffield FC White, Club Doncaster Titans White and Mansfield Town Ability Counts FC all completed their regular seasons in a three-way tie on 22 points each.

All three teams had identical match records – seven wins, one draw and two defeats each, and a play-off or penalty shoot-out was clearly impossible.

However, treating the clubs head-to head record against the other two clubs and treating those results as a mini-league derives the following outcome.

  1. Mansfield Town v Titans White – one win for Titans, and a draw. So, Titans 4 points and Mansfield 1.

  2. Mansfield Town v Sheffield FC White – one win for each club; Mansfield 3 points, Sheffield White 3 points.

  3. Sheffield FC White v Titans White – one win for each club; Sheffield FC White 3 points, Titans White 3 points.

Expressing those results as a mini-league provides the following outcome: –

Club Doncaster Titans White     P6         Points 7

Sheffield FC White                        P6          Points 6

                Mansfield Town                            P
6          Points 4

On this three-way head to head basis, therefore, Club Doncaster Titans White are confirmed as seven-a-side Championship winners for season 2023/4 .

Presentations will be made ahead of the Championship Divisional Competition in March. ”

Commiserations to Sheffield FC White and Mansfield Town FC for coming so close after a fantastic season. Ironically, it was that 0 – 0 draw in the final game which gave Titans the edge, although they couldn’t have known it at the time!
Honourable mentions, too for Bradford City Amber and Derek Dooley Red for making the division so competitive, and to the guys from Glossop North End who have been fantastic additions to our League!

In League One, there were 10 matches of 12 minutes, one-way, held on a round-robin basis, with Phil as referee.
Club Doncaster Titans Red got the action under way with a narrow win over Derek Dooley Orange, watched by Titans John Hibbert: –

“ In our first match against Derek Dooley we played our game from the start moving the ball well. ” John told us. “ At halftime time it was a draw; then they started to play but Bisby crossed a lovely pass and Ryan got on the end of it and scored – so we won that game 1 – 0 ”
Titans stayed on pitch one to take on Mansfield Town “ We started to play but they were more organised, so they scored,” John told SYACL.com. “ I thought we were going to score but their keeper was outstanding. They scored again; by now we were arguing amongst each other, and we lost. So, by now morale was low. ”

Title-chasing Wheatley Wanderers were next in action, beating Derek Dooley Orange 1 – 0. “It was a tough game where both teams had their chances, ” Wheatley’s Chris Pow explained. ” After a goal mouth scramble, Steven put it away for the game-winner. ”

Wheatley made a quick turnaround to face closest challengers Mansfield Town. “ The Mansfield keeper played well, as did their whole team, ” Chris Pow told us. “ After they scored we lost a bit of spark, and they had their win. ”

Aston Blue took the points with a win over Titans Red, then shared a 1 – 1 draw with Derek Dooley Orange, then Mansfield Town kept up their challenge with a win over Dooley.

Titans Red had some sorting out to do before their final match with Champions-elect Wheatley Wanderers, as John Hibbert explains: –

“ I decided to play and come out of retirement, “ John told us. “ Wheatley scored first then I subbed a player and I played, and we got a foot hold in the game. I strengthened our defence and there was a scuffle at the other end and Aleksei scored. I asked how long was left in match, it was a couple of minutes then final whistle was blown. We drew with the team who won the League, and we were the second team today to take points off Wheatley Wanderers. I was pleased – we celebrated like we won the world cup and well done to Jordan; you made a difference in attack by giving us a bit of pace. ”

“ So, at end of the day we won one game, lost two and drew one. I was very proud of my team at the end and was privileged to be part of that today. So, thank you team. ”

“ Justin scored first, and we had other chances to take the game, but Titans played well and scored a late scramble, ” was Wheatley’s Chris Pow’s assessment of the contest.

Wheatley confirmed their League One title with a win over Aston Swallownest Blue. “ Aston played really well but our defence and keeper Pete were up to the task, ” Chris Pow reported. “ We kept to our game plan and scored some good goals. ”

Mansfield Town wound up their season as runners-up with a win over Aston Blue.

To the delight of their travelling supporters, Chris Pow and his Wheatley team collected the League One trophy and their winners medals from referee Phil. Before the champagne flowed.

More in the gallery.

Huge congratulations to Mansfield Town who pushed them all the way.

Aston Swallownest Blue concluded a fine season in third, John Hibbert’s Titans Red fourth, and Dooley Orange in fifth with a win and five draws in their 12 games.

Hot action on a cold afternoon at Concord

Sheffield Red march on in the Premier Division

Anyone’s title in the Championship as Titans White and Mansfield share the lead.

Unbeaten Wheatley Wanderers out in front in League One.

A cold, cold day at Concord Sports Centre; but as always the www.southyorkshireabilitycountsleague.com seven-a side competition was as intense as ever as the sixteen teams got the second half of their 2023/4 season under way.

Our website editor, Margaret Gregory, summed up the action provided by our reporters, with pictures from the afternoon available on the site gallery. See if you can spot yourself, or your team; and give us a follow on X at @SYorksACL. We are now over 300 followers, and you are welcome to join us.

The Premier Division got under way on Pitch 1 with Brian as referee. Aston Red took all three points with a narrow win over Rotherham United Community Sports Trust. Next up, Sheffield Red and Sheffield Blue shared the points – and the bragging rights – after a hard-fought 1 – 1 draw. In game three, Barton Athletic enjoyed a fine win over Rotherham United before Sheffield FC Blue and Aston Red drew 1 – 1 to share the points.

In the final match of the afternoon, and in an excellent match, Sheffield Red took a hard-earned three points with a 2 – 0 win over Barton Athletic.

After eight matches each, Sheffield Red are closing in on the title. They are unbeaten and lead their Coach and Horses stablemates Sheffield Blue by nine points. It’s a hugely competitive Division, and Aston Red and Barton Athletic share third place with ten points. Rotherham United continue to improve and have four points.

In the Championship, Sheffield White got the action under way in a feisty clash with Mansfield Town on Pitch 2, with Phil as referee. Sheffield took a 2 – 0 win despite being reduced to six players.

Next, Club Doncaster Titans White took a narrow win over Derek Dooley Red, watched by Dooley’s Claire Cowlishaw.

“ Reds first game was a hard fought match against Doncaster with good passing and some good defending from Elliott, Adam, Jack and Dom. Josh settled into his new team and had a good run, but shot over. The lads kept on trying but a strong shot got past Nathan, Doncaster came on stronger and the lads lost their way a little and lost the game 2 – 0. ”

Glossop North End earned a deserved first point of their South Yorks ACL campaign with a really impressive draw with Sheffield FC White, congratulations to the team and their coaching staff!

Mansfield Town took a 2 – 0 win over Derek Dooley Red in match 4. Dooley’s Claire oversaw the action:

“ The second game was against Mansfield and the lads started better with more precise passing and a lovely run from Jack, but it went over. Some solid tackling from Richard in midfield and up to Josh whose shot was saved. This was a better performance with more passing, but a shot got past Nathan, this didn’t knock the lads. They kept trying and grew into the game, but just couldn’t score. ”

Next, Bradford City Amber took on Club Doncaster Titans White, watched by Bradford City’s coach Dan:

“ A big well done to our 7 a side Ambers today, “ Danny told us. “ Our game with Doncaster Titans was tough and we lost 3 – 0. We struggled with the loss of 6 players from our original squad and Doncaster proved too good on the day and ran out deserved winners! ”

After a short break, Bradford City Amber were quickly back in action in their last game of the day against a buoyant Glossop North End and were delighted to take the three points.

“ After a fall out in the first game, we got our act together and beat Glossop 3 – 1, ” Dan told us. “ Our goals came from Luke (2) and Scott scored his first goal since joining the club. A big well done to all players today, especially Ben, Jack and Toby in goal who made their 7 a side debuts. ”

“ Our player of the day goes to Luke – well done mate! ”

Dan Hall sent in his report:

” Our 2nd game against Derek Dooley and first time round we beat them 7 – 1, but totally different this time. Derek Dooley defended well and also come close, but Kuba took a kick in and what a kick it was. The keeper caught it but not enough so slipped through his hands handing CDT the lead, and the rest of the game. Chance after chance but finishing CDT 1 – 0 Derek Dooley.

The 2nd game CDT v Bradford – 1st time we met these and won 3-1. Manager Dan told CDT to go out there and play good and they did, with an assist from Phil to Liam Wood banging in the 1st goal 1 – 0 CDT. Half time we had some changes and went straight into it with Phil assisting Liam Wood for his 2nd with a head skim and beating the keeper; Keith broke free and crossed to Liam Taylor who tried tapping it in for a sitter but the ricochet bounced off his foot straight over the cross bar. Towards latter stages of the 2nd half Connor banged in a third, what a game from all at CDT Whites winning 3 – 0. ”

It couldn’t be closer at the top of the Championship. Club Doncaster Titans White and Mansfield Town FC share the lead on 18 points, with Sheffield FC White on 16 points. Bradford City Amber have 12, Dooley Red have 6 and Glossop are off the mark with that fine draw .

The five matches in League One took place on Pitch 3 with Sean as referee. In the first match, league leaders Wheatley Wanderers took on Mansfield Town, and the match ended in a goalless draw.

“ Mansfield started strongly and nearly caught us out a few times, ” Wheatley’s Chris Pow told us. “ We improved slowly but both teams were organised at the back, so it was a tight game. Our keeper Pete made some important saves, but their keeper saved a few too in some tricky goal mouth scrambles. ”

Aston Blue took three points with an excellent 4 – 2 win over Derek Dooley Orange. Dooley’s Claire admitted that it had been a tough game:

“ This was not a good start to the game when a sliding tackle gave Aston a penalty, giving them an early lead and heads went down. There was a good run by Believe who shot wide. A good run from Aston saw them take a commanding lead, with heads down they kept trying but they went 3 – 0 down so an extra player went, this spurred them on, and they got a goal back. Nathan got his shirt on and went to coach from the pitch, which worked to get the team playing as a team and talking to each other and they finished 4 – 2 ”

Wheatley were back in action with a 3 – 1 win over Club Doncaster Titans Red.

“ Titans were playing their long ball game, but our defence stayed resolute, ” Chris Pow told us. “ Sean scored at distance, but Titans responded with a deflected shot that wrong footed our keeper. After half time Sean scored another on one of his meandering runs, and Chris played a long assist for Justin to slot it under their keeper. ”

Titans’ John Hibbert watched the same game:  “ We started really strong. We defended well then Michael did a Johann Cruyff turn and scored a screamer straight in top corner; then we tried to defend our lead. Sean left his man and scored for them so at half time we were drawing 1 – 1. In the second half we were getting tired, they started to dominate and scored twice and won 3 – 1. ”

Aston Blue capped off an excellent afternoon with a 1- 0 win over Mansfield Town to take maximum points from the day.

In the final match of the day, Dooley Orange and Titans Red shared the points in a 1 – 1 draw.

“ In our second game against Derek Dooley, we started strongly and dominated most of the first half, ” John Hibbert explained. “ In the second half we played our game and defenders pinged the ball around. Alexei was too strong and got away from his player and scored his first goal for the Red team. Then they got a free kick and scored so it ended up 1 – 1”

“ We have a lot of positives, ” John summed up. “ We  still need to find our positions, but well done everyone who played today. ”

Dooley’s Claire watched the game too. “ The second game was against Doncaster, which was a good even game with the lads playing as a team with better communication / passing. Doncaster went ok the lead, but the lads kept going and Believe had a chance, but it was saved. There was some great passing between Jack and Matthew.

Solid defending from John, Brad, and Jack. Good effort from Gregg and Dean and Jamie Lee who managed to score near the end to gain a draw. “

“ Well done everyone! ”

Wheatley are unbeaten and have a ten point lead after 8 matches, so their army of supporters will have headed home happy with another four points on the day. Aston Blue ‘s two wins helped them up to second, just ahead of Mansfield Town who themselves have a one point lead over Titans Red. Dooley Orange are a further point behind.

S Yorks Ability Counts League Christmas  fundraiser crashes through £1200

Campaign supports outdoor activities at Childrens Hospital Ryegate House

Sheffield Red head Sheffield Blue in the Premier League

Mansfield Town ahead of Titans in Championship

Wheatley Wanderers go marching on in League One

A gloomy but mostly dry afternoon at Concord Sheffield last Sunday 10th December, saw 16 seven-a-side fixtures which underlined how every team and division is improving each month, with fantastic performances at both ends of all three pitches expertly officiated by our brilliant referees Sean, Brian and Phil.

Importantly, over £120 in cash was collected towards the South Yorkshire Ability Counts League’s Christmas fundraiser in support of the Children’s Hospital Charity Ryegate Centre. The campaign has now raised over £1200, a fantastic achievement . Well, done and thanks to everyone. Let’s keep it going!

More detail about the fundraising campaign is available at www.southyorkshireabilitycountsleague.com including a link to our Just Giving site.

For the penultimate time this season, website editor Margaret Gregory gave all of our reporters their 50p’s and sent them out to report on the action. As always, they did so brilliantly.

Barton Inclusive Athletic got the afternoon under way in the Premier Division with a 1 – 1 draw against Aston Swallownest Red. Aaron and Sophie from Barton watched a closely-fought game.

“Athletic end the year on a high!” Sophie told us. Volunteer Aaron shares his thoughts. ” We drew 1 – 1 in our first game v Aston Swallownest. We went down 1 – 0 early on with a scruffy goal, then Athletic pressed and pressed and scored late on by Andrew. A great team goal, 2/3 good saves from Jay too.”

After Sheffield FC Red had taken the points with a 3 – 1 win over Rotherham United Community Sports Trust, Barton were in action again with a win over Sheffield FC Blue.

Rotherham UCST

“ We beat Sheffield Blues 2 – 1 in the best game I’ve seen them play considering they only had a bare seven.” Aaron told us. “ Jamie got player of the day but to be fair they could have all got it. Jay CW had his photo taken by the league as they were impressed with his performance (made his day).”

Barton’s Manager Andrew, who played every minute himself due to only have a squad of seven was absolutely delighted with his squad. “ Just want to say for the players who played today thank you and well played, you were all outstanding!” Andrew told us. “ Every single one of you put in 110% in both games and we came away with 4 points! Shame it could have been 6, but we move on! The main thing was us finally playing the way we know we can. Well Done Jamie as well for player of the match you put in a hard graft, was involved in all the goals and have the injuries to show for it. Great way to end the year and hope to see you all on the 18th for our final training session of the year! Have a good rest on your Sunday evenings.”

“Colin from the South Yorkshire Ability Counts League Committee contacted the club to say our GK Jay was ‘brilliant. ”

The impressive Sheffield Red took three points with a 2 – 1 win over Aston Swallownest Red to secure maximum points for the day, before Rotherham United CST took the win by a single goal against Sheffield Blue Disability to close out the Premier League fixtures.

With all the teams having played six games, Sheffield Red enjoy a seven point lead over their Sheffield Blue colleagues, with ever-improving Barton Athletic in third. Aston have six points, and Rotherham four in a really competitive division.

In the Championship, Dooley Red beat a depleted Glossop North End 1 – 0 in what became a friendly. Claire from Dooley saw the game.

“ The first game against Glossop was a friendly due to lack of players for them, so we lent them one of our players (thank you to Stephen) and it was played with less pressure and Jack started the scoring, ” Claire explained. “ The team played some great passing and Elliott didn’t have anything to do as stand in goalkeeper for the first half. They took a 3 – 0 lead, so Brad swapped teams and Aiden volunteered to have a go in goal. Glossop came back with a goal, then they had all their players and a goal from Elliott, finishing 5 – 2. ”

Next up, Sheffield White took a one-goal win over Bradford City Amber, while league leaders Mansfield Town Ability Counts saw off Glossop North End 3 – 1.

Bradford City Amber

Dooley Red were back on pitch 2 for a thrilling game against Bradford City Amber.

“ After a long break their second game was against Bradford,” Claire from Dooley told us. “ This started at a good pace and Jack playing in midfield opened the scoring. There was good passing between midfield up to Jack who made it 2 – 0. Solid defending by Dom and Adam kept them out. Aiden got the ball on the right and scored. There was a corner and Adam ran down the wing and claimed the ball and scored his first goal of the season. The lads went to two touch and played good football winning their second game of the season. Well done lads and Lewis on his first matches coaching and Jack on his hat trick. ”

Club Doncaster Titans White got their afternoon under way with a narrow defeat to Sheffield FC White watched by Dan Hall.

“ In our first game of the afternoon and we started out great in the 1st half coming close so many times, but just not enough to break the deadlock,” Dan explained. “ In the second half we again couldn’t capitalise and Sheff FC got through to score the only goal of the game. You can’t win them all! ”

Titan were right back in action with the final Championship game of the day, and they took the points with a win over Mansfield Town in a fantastic game. Mansfield are at the top of the table and the game started out great from both teams. We came close to score, but didn’t come from a counter,” Dan told us. “ Liam Wood assisted Connor C from a corner to grab his 1st debut goal for Titans CDT 1 Mansfield 0. The teamwork Titans showed for the rest of the game was brilliant and lovely to watch, and the game was played with no malice and finished CDT 1 Mansfield 0”.

“Well Done” said Dan.

Despite that late narrow defeat, Mansfield have a three point lead over Titans White and Sheffield White who both have 12 points. Bradford Amber have nine points, and Dooley Red six in another closely-contested table.

In League One, Wheatley Wanderers were well supported as always, and they delighted their fans with an opening win over Aston Swallownest. Wheatley’s Chris Pow summed up the win.

“ Aston really impressed us with how they started and put us under real pressure. Chris scored a 20 yard stunner though, and we began to find our rhythm. Steven scored a tap in from a good cross to put the game past Aston. ”

In the second game, Derek Dooley Orange shared the points after a 1 – 1 draw with Mansfield Town.

Mansfield Town

“ Coach Nathan set up his side and they started well with good passing by Matt up to Jamielee, but shot wide. This was a good team play with lots of positive runs from Jack and Matt, solid defending from John and Clark until he took himself off, ” Claire from Dooley told us. “ This was an even game with some good football, then John did a super header, but it flew past Dave into his own net! The lads kept going but just not on target. The last minute of the game saw all the players go up for a corner and the ball came out to Jamielee who shot it past the keeper to earn a well-deserved draw. ”

Next up, John Hibbert’s Titans faced Aston Swallownest, and lost by the odd goal in three.

“ We started like we’re panicking a lot, but they scored first 1 – 0, then we got a break and Callum Bisby scored a cracker to make it 1 – 1,” John explained. “ They got a free kick and they scored again so we lost but put up a good fight. ”

The free kick was a spectacular strike – see if you can find the picture of the goal on our website. ”

Wheatley faced off against Dooley Orange in the penultimate game of the day.

“ We had another competitive game against Dooley’s,” Chris Pow explained. “ It was close, until a player got sin binned for handball in the box. The goalkeeper went the right way, but Steven’s penalty was placed firmly into the bottom corner. Sean scored twice after that, which he deserved after another fine performance. ”

Dooley’s Claire watched the game too. “ The second game was a hard match against top of the league Wheatley. This was a tough game which became harder when John fell over Dave and the ball hit his arm, so a penalty was given, so 1 – 0 down. Wheatley were a good side and scored again. The lads didn’t give up trying and Jamielee had a good shot, which was saved. Brad had a good run, but the ball ran away from him. Jack had great game with his injured ankle so had to come off and Gregg came on. ”

“Well done everyone on putting in a great shift today. ”

Club Doncaster Titans rounded off the day with a goalless draw with Mansfield Town, watched by John Hibbert.

“ We started off strong and we started to pass the ball,” John told us. “ We were playing more as a team, and it was brilliant to watch us playing our game. We have some positives, well played Aleksei in his first game. ”

“ We have still got things to work on but there’s still another day – so back to training ground. ”

So, in League One, Wheatley go marching on with five wins out of six. It’s close between Mansfield, Titans Red and Dooley Orange, and Aston Blue aren’t far away either.

Sheffield Reds edging Sheffield Blue in thrilling Premier Division title race

Perfect Mansfield Town head Bradford City Amber in Championship

Wheatley Wanderers stretch League One lead with two wins

It was the Second South Yorkshire Ability Counts League matchday of 2023/4 for our seven-a-side open-aged clubs, with 16 fixtures across three Divisions at Concord Sports Centre in Sheffield last Sunday.

As you’d expect, our www.southyorkshireabilitycountsleague.com editor, Margaret Gregory issued instructions to our growing army of match reporters to bring back the best of the matchday action for our readers, and as you’d expect, they did as they were told, capturing the thrills and spills of another exciting day.

Photos of the games are slowly trickling into the news desk.

First up in the Premier Division Sheffield Blue and Sheffield Red locked horns in the usual feisty local derby, with the Reds coming out on top. “The Sheffield FC disability reds team played their second round of league games and what a tough day it proved to be. Firstly, we played our club rivals the blues team and it was a cagey affair. The blue team had plenty of the ball, however we were strong defensively. We were very organised and kept our shape throughout the game. In the second half we managed to break away with Taighler calmly slotting in the only goal. A great result against last season’s league champions.”

Premier league = REDS reported by Peter Duxbury

Blues stayed on Pitch One to take the points in their second match with Aston Red before Sheffield Red saw off Barton Inclusive.

“Our second game against Barton wasn’t any easier. We started very quickly with a mazey and skillful run from Ant ending in a goal in the bottom corner. Again we played in an controlled manner limiting chances to Barton who had lots of possession. The closest Barton came was brilliantly saved onto the post by Matthias. Two wins out of two is something we haven’t done in a long time so a good day for the Sheffield FC disability Reds.”

Aston shared the points in a draw with Rotherham United Community Trust; and in the final game of the day, Barton secured three points with a win over Rotherham.

Premier league = BLUES reported by Scott Gregory/Dan Pellegrina

“First game was against Sheffield FC Red. A very close and cagey game, played in an exemplary way by both teams. Blue pushed all game for the all important first goal, but were caught out by a breakaway goal mid way through the second half. Although Blue continued to pressurise for the equaliser, Reds held on for the 1 – 0 win.”

“Second game versus Aston saw Sheffield Blue press the game in the first half, but with continued threat of quick counter attacks from 2 very fast and excellent Aston players. Half time arrived with the score locked at 1 – 1 with Ben Wittenberg scoring for Sheffield. Sheffield started the second half very strongly with a quick fire hat trick from Keaton Johnson. Aston continued to cause problems and responded with two quick fire goals of their own, before Keaton bagged his fourth goal of the game to finish at 5 – 3. Again, game played in excellent and competitive spirits, with both set of players being a credit to their teams.”

With all five clubs having played four games in a highly competitive Division, Sheffield Red lead their local rivals Sheffield Blue by a single point as the World’s Oldest Football Club continue to set the pace in the Premier Division. Aston Red have five points, Barton Inclusive three and Rotherham that single point from Sunday’s draw.

Standings are as follows: –

Into the Championship on Pitch Two then, and Derek Dooley Red got the action under way against Sheffield White, with the Sheffield club taking the points. Sheffield White stayed on the pitch, this time taking on Club Doncaster Titans White, watched by John Hibbert.

“ We were straight into the match with end to end action from both sides, very challenging until CDT broke the deadlock with Danny Grubb getting his 1st, so 1 – 0 to CDT,” John told us. “ On to the 2nd half and again both teams were playing well especially Liam Taylor who hounded their defence and wouldn’t let them go forward. This led to a bad pass from a Sheff FC player back to their keeper and Danny Grubb came in like a thief in the night to snatch that pass from the keeper. Took it round him and banged in a 2nd! Final whistle, SHEFF FC 0 – 2 CDT”.

Next up, Bradford City faced Glossop North End. Bradford’s coach Danny reported on the game for @SYorksACL. “ Bradford City Disability FC v Glossop was the first meeting in the league for these 2 teams,” Danny recounted. “ Bradford started strong taking an early lead from Josh with a great strike to beat the keeper, followed by a great team goal scored by Luke. The second half was a bit of a better game from Glossop, Bradford struggled to come up with a third, then out of nowhere, it came from Luke the scorer again, the game ending 3 – 0 to Bradford City.”

Mansfield Town Disability FC took the three points with a win over Derek Dooley Red, before Doncaster Titans White took on Glossop.

Here’s John Hibbert; “ After a five minute interlude , CDT were back straight to it against the new team in the league Glossop North End. CDT basically giving the new team a good run, but CDT soon banged in a goal by Keith Parker. Not long after Liam Taylor blasted in a second from a free kick which was taken by Keith Parker Half time 2 – 0 to  CDT.”

“ As the second half got under way the CDT coach allowed Glossop to fetch on another player, due to the team being new in the league and still trying to find their feet,” John Hibbert explained. “In this 2nd half Glossop had 2 players 33 and 34 who dominated their half, but CDT played tremendously well and marked them both well. The game was played well and in the final moments Danny Grubb finally played the ball through and assisted Liam Taylor in his 2nd goal of the game finishing 3 – 0 to CDT”.

In the final match in this division, Bradford City Amber took on Mansfield Town. Bradford City coach Danny watched his side: – “A totally opposite game to the previous one,” Danny told us. “ Bradford were a bit sluggish going down 1 – 0 early on, but then in the second half pulled it back to 1 – 1 with Josh scoring. Then it was all Mansfield who scored 2 more goals, Bradford losing 3 – 1. The better team won on the day. Well done to Mansfield!”

Championship (Kevin Marsh/Wayne McDonnell)

Sheffield FC V Derek Dooley

“Sheffield started the game very fast and put pressure on early, they had a couple of chances with Matt Bough going close both times, but Derek Dooley defended well in an entertaining first half. Sheffield then went ahead with a lovely passing move that unfortunately for Derek Dooley was turned into their own net. The second half followed a similar pattern with both teams having chances but both defending well, then Sheffield again with a lovely passing move that Matt Lynne drilled the ball towards goal and unfortunately for Derek Dooley was turned into there own net again. A really good competitive game that finished 2 – 0 to Sheffield.”

Sheffield FC V Doncaster Titans

“A game in which Sheffield didn’t really get going and Doncaster played well taking the lead in the 1st half after a mix up at the back for Sheffield with a well taken goal. Second half was very similar even though Sheffield made several changes, but still couldn’t get into the match and again another mix up at the back allowed Doncaster in to score. In the end a 2 – 0 win for Doncaster was a true reflection of the game.”

So, after four matches each, it’s a tight battle throughout the Division. Mansfield Town have made the perfect start to the campaign with their one hundred per cent record, but Bradford City Amber and Club Doncaster Titans White are both only three points behind, with Sheffield White on six points. Glossop North End have also made a good start and will surely be in the points sooner rather than later.

There were five fixtures in League One, and in the first of these, Derek Dooley Orange took the points in their match against Doncaster Titans Red Junior.  The FA’s Disability Grassroots Coach of the Year, Dooley’s Nathan Pearson gave us his take on his side’s win.

“The Orange team showed amazing teamwork in these games,” Nathan explained. “In the first game there was an amazing team goal with nearly every player touching the ball and Brad on the end of it. Matt had an amazing debut as he scored from a pass by Jamie from a kick-in. The final score of the game was 2 – 1 in favour of Dooley Orange. Well played to Doncaster Red for an amazing game. There was good defending throughout the games by Clarke and Jon and some brilliant saves by Dave.”

Titan’s coach, Daniel Hall watched the same game: – “ In our First game against Derek Dooley we played well,” Danny said. “They scored and we started to lose it a little bit, so first half was 1 – 0. Then we had a little discussion and in the second half we started to press a bit more and pulled one back; Jeff beat his man and made a through pass to Ryan, and he scored. Just before the final whistle they scored again to make it Derek Dooley 2 Club Doncaster Titans 1

After Mansfield Town had taken the win over Aston Blue, Daniel Hall watched his side’s next game against Wheatley Wanderers: – “ In the second game we were playing really well; Callum was marking Shaun out of the game but then they scored up at other end. Ryan scored a screamer, but we didn’t mark people close enough and they scored again, and it ended up Wheatley Wanderers 2  Titans 1. We have got to press faster and win the ball back quicker – so things to work on in training.”

Wheatley’s Chris Pow told http://www.southyorkshireabilitycountsleague.com  “A good game was had against the Titans. Justin put us in front with a goalmouth scramble, then Titans scored quickly with a decent effort. In the second half, Justin slotted another one in off a great assist from Sean.”

In the next game, Aston Blue and Derek Dooley Orange battled out a goalless stalemate.

“This second game was a brilliant encounter with Aston Blue,” Orange coach Nathan told us. “Believe hit the bar very early on after a chipped effort. A very well-played game from both teams in a great encounter. Well done to Aston Blue for an amazing game the final score was 0 – 0.”

In the final game of the day in the Division, another three points for Wheatley Wanderers after their win over Mansfield Town.

Mansfield are a team with youth and speed and gave us a challenging game Wheatley’s Chris Pow explained. “Justin scored another class goal, having a great day (he’s 53). Our experience helped us see out the win.”

Those two wins for Wheatley Wanderers sees them admiring the view from the summit of League One. They have a four point lead over Danny’s Doncaster Titans Red and Mansfield Town. Nathan Person’s Dooley Orange are going well in five points, with Aston Blue getting off the mark with that draw on Sunday.

Bradford City Amber and Mansfield Town ACFC head the Championship

Titans Red make fast League One start

It was a warm welcome back to the South Yorkshire Ability Counts League’s 7-a-side teams last Sunday (8th October) at Concord Sports Centre in Sheffield. There were plenty of familiar clubs and faces, and some new ones too; the League welcomed back two teams from Mansfield Town Ability Counts FC and a  new team from Glossop North End FC.

If you weren’t amongst the spectators at Concord last Sunday, don’t worry – we had several match reporters covering the action under the watchful, spell-checking eye of our www.southyorkshireabilitycountsleague.com editor Margaret Gregory. So off we go….

There were five matches in the Premier Division, and Sheffield Blue got their season of to a good start with a win over Rotherham United Community Sports. After a hard fought draw between Aston Swallownest Red and Sheffield FC Red, Barton Town kicked off their season against Sheffield Blue, and Barton’s Chair, Sophie Bartup, sent us a match report from team coach Ryan Norton.

Barton Athletic FC, led by new management team Ryan Norton and Andrew Gregory, travelled to Sheffield on Sunday 8th October, to launch their league campaign. Ryan reported: –

“New season back for Barton!

With some changes, new manager and new coach, we went to Sheffield with our heads in our shoulders and no matter what we wanted to make sure we were smiling regardless of what was going to happen, we wanted a refreshing season ahead of us.

First game against Sheffield Blue we started the game steady like we usually do as we like to pick up our pace, however Sheffield managed to score from a corner just before the half time whistle. From half time we had Barton playing better football, more talking and more smiles on faces. We managed to bring two goals back with Dave Salah the returning King scoring both to make the score 2 – 1; with only five minutes left of the game we set our heels in a little two early and Sheffield came back in a great attack and scored another two to make the final score 3 – 2 to Sheffield.“

Sheffield Red took three points from their win over Rotherham United before Aston Red brought the day to a close with a win over Barton. Here’s how Ryan from Barton saw the action: –

“Second game against Aston Swallownest, we started to give them a good run and playing some good football, however like every other team we saw on Sunday, everyone had been practicing and maybe just maybe we thought they might play like they usually do but oh no, hands down to Aston. They worked really well to get two goals past our amazing keeper Jay who I must say had some incredible saves throughout the day! Final score ended in 2-0 to Aston, not the best start to the first day of the league BUT it isn’t over yet, and we still left being happy in ourselves so that’s the main thing.”

“Player of the Day was collected by Dave, on his return to the team after an excellent display leading the Athletic line. The team were supported on the day by super fans Aaron and Marc, who look forward to the season ahead!”

“Barton Inclusive FC would like to thank all the volunteers who supported the day.”

Peter Duxbury for Sheffield fc adult disability team sent in this report: –

“We started our league campaign with a disjointed performance against Aston Swallownest, having a couple of new players, that will take time to integrate, we soon fell behind. We responded quickly with an equalizer from Taighler, however we were soon behind again when Aston broke quickly and took their goal well with sharp/quick passes and were clinical in front of goal. We started to eventually settle into the game and managed to equalize just before half time with a mazey run and goal from Ant. Game remained competitive with the game ending in a 2 – 2 draw.

“In the second game against Rotherham we started quickly out of the blocks. We showed some great movement and within the first 8 minutes we were 2 goals up with a brace from Ant. The move of the match was when Evan skillfully evaded his marker to pass and move with Ant, followed by a fizzing pass into the box for Taighler to tap in. Ant followed up with a goal for his hattrick and we won the game comfortably 4 – 0. Hats off to Rotherham who showed resilience to keeping playing through to the end and played in the right spirit.”

Peter continued, “two keenly fought initial league games for Sheffield FC Blue, coming out on top by a single goal in both games.

First game versus Rotherham was won 1 – 0 with numerous changes for Sheffield FC, with the goal coming from Asa Wilson.

Second game saw Sheffield FC go 1 – 0 up against Barton, with an own goal from a low and hard corner from Ben Wittenberg. Barton came out strong in the second half to take 2 – 1 lead. Sheffield FC fought back, showing strong resilience right to the final kick of the game with 2 goals from Ben Wittenberg.

Barton Inclusive

Strong and key performances, as always from Thomas Dore, Ryan Webster and Carl Rennie. Experienced and strong debut from Dan Purdy. Special mention to new players Danny Black who caused menace with his pace and Kyle Johnson who kindly went in a goal for both games and ensured we stayed in both games.”

So, with each team having two games under their belts, Sheffield Blue lead the way with maximum points. Aston Red and Sheffield Red share second spot with four points; but it’s early days, and Barton and Rotherham still have a big shout in the contest.

There were six matches in the Championship, with two early pace setters, Bradford City Amber and Mansfield Town Ability Counts.

Danny Johnson is the new coach/reporter at Bradford City. “Our match against Club Doncaster Titans was the first fixture for Bradford City Disability FC and it saw them go into a new season with a couple of new players making their debuts,” Danny explained. “The game couldn’t have started better for them going into an early lead with a goal from Jo-Jo then the second soon followed with Jo-Jo scoring again, so we finished the half 2 – 0 up.

Bradford City kicked off the second half and again another quick goal made it 3 – Luke scoring that goal -then with a quick break Doncaster pulled a goal back making it 3 – 1. In the last 2 minutes Jo-Jo scored his third goal for Bradford, making it a hattrick on his debut. Bradford won 4 – 1.“

Dan Hall watched that same game from a Club Doncaster Titans perspective.

“The game started off well from both teams end to end football, with chances for both teams. CDT had a lot of chances, but the shots were just shy of goal, BCFC broke the deadlock to make it 1 – 0. Soon after that BDFC made it 2 – 0 then Danny G from CDT equalised 2 – 1. But CDT made a few mistakes and BDFC made it 3 – 1 CDT tried to hold them off, but BDFC were too strong when a shot bounced off the crossbar and a player knocked it in, game finished 4 – 1 to BDFC.”

Titans were straight back in action, this time against Derek Dooley Red.  Here’s Dan from Titans: –

“With only a 5 min interval CDT were straight back into their 2nd game, coach Dan Hall made a change and went in net to utilize Phil. Well what a well decision it was as Coach Dan Hall made some tremendous saves in the 1st half and it wasn’t too long before CDT broke the deadlock, 1 – 0. CDT goal from Liam Taylor assisted by Danny G. Then a 2nd, again Liam Taylor assisted again by Danny G. Onto a 3rd from CDT and Keith finished it off nicely 3 – 0 half time.”

“Straight into the 2nd half and a change was made. Mark Kelton came on for Aaron Dickson DD SHEFF UTD kept the pressure on and got 1 back, but CDT didn’t hold back with Liam Taylor repaying a bye assist to Danny G who knocked one in 4 – 1, but didn’t stop there, this game was falling off the radar with Phil getting one and then Liam Taylor scoring another 2, game finished 7 – 1 to CDT. What a game!!”

Dooley Red’s coach Claire Cowlishaw admitted that it had been a tough start to the season. “Derek Dooley Red team didn’t have a good start to the first games of the season with 2 losses,” Claire told us. “The first game against Doncaster was a rude awakening with them soon going 3 – 0 down, the lads then started to calm down and not to rush, taking time on the ball, passing and using all players, and Brad scoring a consolation goal.

Next up, Mansfield Town got their campaign off to a good start with a win over fellow-newcomers Glossop North End. Mansfield’s Vernon Thompson watched the game for @SYorksACL: –

“Glossop 1 – 3 Mansfield Town,” Vernon told us. “This was a  really close game and not as the scoreline suggests, I feel our fitness saw us through.”

Natalie Mills from Glossop North End described that first game.  “Glossop NE CC played their first game against Mansfield Town,” Natalie said. “It was a great game for our first match however, it took us a while to learn the new rules and adapt to the pitches and we conceded a few goals early on, but we kept working and the team were rewarded with their first goal from JJ. Mansfield winning 3 – 1, but a great start for us.”

Bradford City Amber kept up their first day momentum with a win over Dooley Red. “This game was a tight affair,” Danny Johnson admitted. ”Bradford took a lead around 3 minutes Jo-Jo again the scorer of that goal, but Derek Dooley kept finding their chances but couldn’t get it over the line. Bradford soaked up the pressure and held off for the rest of the day leaving the score 1 – 0 to Bradford.

Bradford City disability

Player of the day went to Jo-Jo but well done to all players of all teams as always a great round of fixtures.”

Claire Cowlishaw was much happier with her Dooley Red team. “The second game against Bradford started better as the lads were calmer and talking to each other with some good passing, but a mix up at the back let them in, with only 6 on the pitch due to Stephen falling off pitch, and having a blue card! Jack had a great run down the wing, but Brad missed the target. Some good defending by Adam & Dom kept them out.”

Mansfield Town secured three more points after a cracking game with Sheffield White. “Sheffield FC 0 – 1 Mansfield Town. Chris Vernon from Mansfield told us, “what a fantastic game of football to watch, an end to end game in which any team could have won it.

With time running out we broke out of defence, a lovely ball through for Chris to latch onto with his pace, he gleefully rounded the keeper & slotted home the winner.” Glossop North End rounded off an encouraging start despite a loss to Sheffield FC (White). The second game against Sheffield White was a really close game with Glossop NE just losing out 2 – 1,” Natalie from Glossop explained. “ Another great goal from JJ with the assist from Dave in goal.”

“Lots of positives to build on ready for the next games,” Natalie summed up.

Sheffield White reporter: – “After winning promotion to the championship Sheffield fc White started the new season in the Championship against Mansfield Town. Sheffield fc White created plenty of chances throughout the game but just couldn’t find the back of the net no matter how hard they tried with Mansfield town players clearing off the line and their goalkeeper saving everything that was thrown at him. Then in the last couple of minutes against the run of play Mansfield broke away and scored the only goal of the game to win the match 1 – 0.”

“In the second game Sheffield fc White played Glossop North End. In the first half Sheffield fc White went into a early lead with Matthew Bough getting the goal, then with chances at both ends it was Sheffield fc White who increased their lead to go 2 – 0 up with Matthew Lyne scoring the goal. It stayed 2 – 0 until halftime. In the second half Glossop North End pulled a goal back to make it 2 – 1, then near enough straight from the restart Sheffield fc White scored their 3rd goal of the match with a brilliant team goal with every player being involved in the move with movement from side to side, back forward for a perfect team goal scored by Matthew Bough. That turn out to be the final goal of the game with Sheffield fc White winning the game 3 – 1.”

Glossop North End

So after a breathless start, Bradford City Amber and Mansfield Town head the table with six points each, Titans White  and Sheffield White are level on three points, with plenty for Dooley Red and Glossop North End to work with as the season progresses.

In League One, there were five matches. In the first, Titans Red got off to a fast start with a win over Mansfield Town Ability Counts FC.

“Titans Vs Mansfield – so half way through the first half Callum Hibbert took a long range shot and the keeper saved it, “ Titans John Hibbert told us, “but Danny scored on rebound when the keeper dropped it – so we won 1 – 0. This is what it’s all about; simple football guys. Well played!”

Mansfield’s Vernon Thompson summed up that same game, “another really close game, but sadly we couldn’t convert a chance. Doncaster attacked down the right, a fierce drive was saved by our keeper, but the rebound fell to the Doncaster player who made no mistake from close range.”

Wheatley’s travelling support watched their heroes get their season under way with a hard fought draw with Derek Dooley Orange. “We always enjoy playing against Dooleys and we always get a good game,” Wheatley’s Chris Pow reported. “There were few chances really as both defences were tight, and a strategic game was played mostly in midfield. A draw was a fair result.”

“Wheatley’s man of the match was Pete Lambert (goalkeeper)”

Claire from Derek Dooley summed up her Orange teams two games. “The Orange team coached by Nathan had some new players and they started off well with great direction from Dave in the net. All the players played with commitment and enthusiasm. Good defending from Richard and John and Jamielee having good runs up the wing. Brad and Gregg had a few tries but couldn’t hit the target. A good display from Jack on his debut for the team. They did well with a loss against Mansfield and a good contested 0 – 0 draw against Wheatley.”

Vernon from Mansfield reflected on that win over Dooley Orange! Derek Dooley 0 – 1 Mansfield Town. “A really tight game that was end to end, won by a well taken goal from Tommy on his debut.”

“A brilliant day of football and  some superb football played by all teams,” Vernon said, “we really enjoyed watching some close competitive games.”

Club Doncaster Titans Red completed a great day for them with a win over Aston Blue.  “We started well,” John Hibbert told us. “ It was good to watch, with players actually passing the ball; then it was half time. Halfway through the second half I brought Jeff on as a sub and he beat the keeper, scored, and we won 1 – 0.”

Wheatley got their first win of the season, defeating Aston Blue. ”The first half was tough,” Chris told us, “with Aston giving a spirited performance. It was end to end stuff.

In the second half our experience of playing in the Championship showed through and we scored, first by Ryan Jamieson and then a brace from Sean Alex Nason.”

“Thanks for a great day’s football, and we look forward to next month.”

So, that fast start from Titans Red gives them an early advantage over Wheatley at the top of the table, with Wheatley second on four points, and Mansfield Town ACFC on three points. Plenty to build on for Dooley Orange and Aston Blue.
