Edenthorpe Juniors seize Under-12’s Championship

The Goals Centre Doncaster saw the final League matchday for our www.southyorkshireabilitycountsleague.com Junior Leagues last Sunday, 3rd March. There were four titles up for grabs, and many of the important issues at both ends of each division remained unresolved as the action got under way just after noon.

As usual, the Juniors were well supported, but for our spectators came the opportunity to participate in the FA’s #silentsupportweekend, with off-field support restricted to applause and encouragement. Our supporters passed the test brilliantly, helping our young players to produce a fabulous afternoon of football.

Well done and thank you all.

So to the action, presented to website editor Margaret by her touchline notetakers.

There were seven games in the Under-16’s Premier Division, on Pitch 10 under the watchful eye of referee Sean, and in the first of these Club Doncaster Titans edged Barton Athletic Hull in a thriller, watched by Titans John Hibbert.

“ We started really well, and it wasn’t long before Devon scored our first goal, ” John told us. “ Then we started to play football, passing the ball about really well. Charlotte made some brilliant tackles and got in some brilliant positions so at halftime we were winning 3 – 0. I thought it was getting a bit one-sided, so I made some substitutions to make my team weaker and Barton got a foot hold in the game and scored  their first goal. They started to dominate us, so I put another player back on and it ended up 4 – 3. Well done to Danny Murphy for getting his hat trick. ”

A quick turnaround for Titans who took on Bradford City Amber. Here’s Titans’ John Hibbert: –

“ So we started well and scored first  and were doing really well and scored again so at half time it was Titans 2 Bradford 0. I made a few subs, and we began to play and scored. They were dominating the game I had a few issues with my team, so we started to pull each other down. I know if we kept our heads we would have won instead we lost 5 – 3. ”

After Mansfield Town enjoyed a good win over Barton, title-chasing Hillsborough Hornets Yellow beat Eckington Boys to set a target for Sheffield FC Blue. The Sheffield players picked up the gauntlet with a hard fought win over Mansfield Town to set the scene for a title decider with Hornets Yellow.

First, Eckington Boys took three points with a narrow win over Bradford City Amber, leaving the stage set for what turned out to be a terrific match between the top two.

It was Sheffield FC Blue who took the glory with a fine win which saw them lift the trophy and winners medals, leaving Hornets Yellow disappointed but proud after a great season. The Trophy and medals were presented by South Yorks Ability Counts League Secretary Paul, and Welfare Officer Andrew, assisted by Richard from Spartans.

A great season with a fantastic last day. Well done to all our clubs and coaches, and to everyone who turned up to watch. Every team in the League won at least two matches to create an extremely competitive and hard-fought division.

Into the Under-16’s Championship, and a close battle between Bradford City Blues, Chesterfield FC Community Trust and unbeaten leaders Rotherham United Community Sports Trust.

In the first of the six games, all refereed by Phil, Hillsborough Hornets Black took three points after a good battle with Mansfield Town before Bradford City Blues enjoyed a big win over Sheffield FC Black to draw level with Chesterfield.

Parity didn’t last long however, as the Under-16 Spirites saw off Hornets Black to secure second spot. Enter Champions-elect Rotherham United, who defeated Mansfield Town to put the fizzy lemonade on ice, and although Chesterfield narrowed the gap with a fine victory over Sheffield FC Black, Rotherham put the icing on a perfect season with a high-scoring win over Bradford City Blues who finished a deserved third.

Rotherham took the trophy  and winners medals-again presented by Paul, Andrew and Richard – with Chesterfield in a fine runners-up spot. Rotherham took 30 points from 10 games to record a 100% season.

Congratulations to everyone in the Division on an excellent season.

So, into the two Under-12 Divisions, and in the Premier, Bradford City FC Diamonds were virtually assured of the title with 8 wins out of 8.

In the first of the six divisional games, refereed by Brian, Hillsborough Hornets White won a tough local derby with Hornets Orange before Mansfield Town took three points from their game with Club Doncaster Titans Blue, watched by Phil Siddons.

“ Both teams started off well, ” Phil told us. “ Mansfield went 4 – 0 up at half time. In the second half Titans got one back when James made it 4 – 1. Andrew kept the Titans in the game and the Mansfield Manager gave Man of the Match to Andrew for all the saves he made. In the second half Titans worked as a team, so well played to both teams. ”

Sheffield FC Red won an eight-goal thriller with Hornets White before Bradford City Diamonds continued their march to glory with a fine win over Hornets Orange.

Bradford City completed their perfect season with an excellent victory over Mansfield, and in the final game of the season, Sheffield FC Red booked second place after a great campaign with a win over Club Doncaster Titans Blue.

Commenting on that last game, Titans Phil Siddons told us “ Sheffield started off strongly, but Titans kept their heads up and battled on. ”

A fantastic season for Bradford City Diamonds, who celebrated the trophy – presented by Andrew and Richard – and winners medals by parading the Trophy at Bradford City FC’s Valley Parade earlier this week when the Bantams met Doncaster Rovers.

In the Under-12’s Championship, we knew that Edenthorpe Juniors were virtually assured of a maiden Championship title, but there was still plenty to play for on Pitch number 8, where Mike and Andrew shared refereeing responsibilities.

In the first game, Rotherham United beat Mansfield Town convincingly, before Club Doncaster Titans Red faced Bradford City Greens, chasing second place.

Titans Steph Hall watched the game for us : –

“ This was a tough match against a good Bradford side. They started the game strongly creating many chances. Bradford  scored a couple of goals to go into the lead. CDT defended well and created some chances. Bradford extended their lead by scoring two more goals just before half time. The second half was much closer. Both teams created chances and it became a close end to end game. Both goalkeepers kept their teams in the game by doing some brilliant saves. CDT got a goal back near the end after Bella did a good save after a Bradford chance. She rolled the ball to Alex who then ran from his own half, dribbling past several players then scoring from outside the box. In the end Bradford won the game. I am proud of the players for trying their best in a tough game. ”

Edenthorpe marched on with a narrow win over Rotherham United, who were playing out of their skins on this final day, before Titans Red played out a fantastic match with Sheffield FC White, watched by Steph Hall.

“ This was a good match played by both teams. It was end to end with both teams creating lots of chances. Sheffield went ahead first scoring two good goals. CDT got one back when Bella passed to Jess who scored from close range. Sheffield went into half time ahead. Sheffield scored just after half time to extend their lead. CDT then scored two goals to bring the game level. First Alex scored from close range on the rebound after a good save from the goalkeeper. Alex then scored again to bring the game level by scoring on the rebound from a defensive clearance. Both teams continued creating chances. Bradford went ahead again after a good team goal. Near the end CDT scored another equaliser to bring the game level. On the attack Bella passed to Alex who scored from outside the box. In the end the game finished a draw and both teams should be proud of how they played. ”

Bradford City Greens set the seal on a super second place with a win over rivals for second Chesterfield by the odd goal in seven, leaving the stage for Champions Edenthorpe, top, play their final match against Steph Hall’s Titans Red.

“ This was another tough game against a good Edenthorpe team, ” Steph explained. “ Edenthorpe started strongly by scoring early in the game. They continued to create many chances and extended their lead by scoring three quick goals and went into half time in the lead. The second half was much of the same, but CDT created more chances and defended well. CDT got two goals, first when Alex scored from outside the box after a good run. Second from Bella who scored from outside the box after some good team play. In the end Edenthorpe won the game. I’m proud of how the players tried their best and showed good sportsmanship. ”

A great season for Edenthorpe with 10 wins from 12 games, winning the title by 7 points from a spirited Bradford City Greens. Chesterfield finished a further four points back. It was a very competitive division, with each team winning at least two games across the season.

A delighted Edenthorpe team lifted the trophy from Paul, Andrew, Mike and Richard, and Bradford City Greens accepted their runners-up awards after a cracking season.

Hornets Yellow edge Sheffield Blue in Under 16’s Premier Division

Perfect Rotherham United ahead in Under-16’s Championship

Hundred per cent Bradford City Diamonds top the Under-12’s Premier Division

New guys Edenthorpe lead the pack in the Under-12’s Championship

There were thirty-two League matches involving the www.southyorkshireabilitycountsleague.com‘s Junior teams at Goals Centre, Doncaster last Sunday. It was a feisty, sometimes fiery afternoon in front of the usual big crowds; and the teams took a few minutes for a photo opportunity commemorating the £3090 raised over the Christmas period for The Children’s Hospital Charity.

In the Under-16’s Premier Division, refereed by Sean on Pitch 10 and Dennis on Pitch 5, Hillsborough Hornets Yellow got the afternoon off to a flying start with a win over Club Doncaster Titans. Titan’s John Hibbert watched the action: –

“ We started strongly, and it was a good game in the first half,” John explained, “ then we lost focus, and they scored first. Our our heads started to drop, and they scored again. Then Devon scored our first goal, but then they scored again, and again to make it Hillsborough Hornets 4 CDT 1. ”

After Mansfield Town had taken the points with a convincing win over Eckington Boys, Eckington stayed on the pitch to take on Barton Inclusive Tigers, watched by Lady Jo Newby and coach Geoff: –

“ The first of our three matches was against Eckington Boys, ” Jo told us. “ We began nervously, relying on James and Harvey with some last ditch interventions to keep the score at 0 – 0. Then BIFC’s very own dynamic duo combined for Bailey to score. Eckington equalised very quickly before Brandon opened his account. The Eckington goalie was keeping them in the game with 3 or 4 fine saves before the sucker punch came and we went to the break 2 – 2. Second half continued with us in the ascendancy, Brandon scoring again before an outrageous goal from Harry, all of 30 yards out, lobbing the goalie and in off the bar bearing in mind the crossbar was 4ft high. Andrew then finished the scoring with a cheeky near post finish when one on one with the goalie. Final Score BIFC 5 Eckington 2. ”

Titans were back in action against Sheffield FC Blue. “ In our second game, at first we were strong but same old story they scored so again we lost our perspective, ” John Hibbert admitted. “ They scored again and again but well done to Thomas Fletcher for his first game against stronger opposition. So, well done but we lost Sheffield 3 CDT 0. ”

Hillsborough Hornets took the win in a real battle with Mansfield Town which saw two players red carded, then Hornets beat Bradford City Amber.

Barton’s second match saw them face Sheffield FC Blue. “ We again began slowly but had no luck as 2 deflected goals and 2 other goals saw us go into the half 4 – 0. Not letting our heads drop we grabbed the initiative and scored a quickfire Brandon and Bailey double before conceding 2 late goals to go down Sheffield FC Blue 6 – Barton 2. ”

Sheffield Blue enjoyed a good win over Eckington Boys, who stayed on pitch 5 to take on Titans.

“ Before our third game we had a team talk and started to play our game, so half time was Eckington Boys 3 – CDT 0. ” Titans’ John reports. ” Then second half we fought back first Devon scored; they started to push back but Devon scored again; then Danny received a pass, beat his player and scored for us to make it in the end Eckington Boys 3 – 3 CDT. ”

After Bradford Amber had seen off Mansfield Town in a keen contest to take the win, Barton took to Pitch 10 for their final game with Bradford City Amber.

“ Harvey was injured so James donned the gloves and was playing very well considering he was thrown in at the deep end, ” Barton’s Jo explained. “ Brandon and Bailey both scored but Bradford equalised each time to go into the 2nd half 2 – 2.  Bradford secured the win 7 – 5, despite Brandon getting a hat trick and Bailey a brace. ”

In the final Premier Division game of the afternoon, Mansfield Town took a fine victory over Doncaster Titans.

“ In the last game we played well, but when they scored we lost our focus again. It was a good game, but we lost the game Mansfield 3 – 0 CDT ”

John summed up the afternoon. “ All my players put a brilliant shift in and a big well done to Danny when a player called him names he went straight off pitch and got his head in the right space and came back on and scored! Give yourself a big pat on the back! At the end of the match, he apologised, and they both shook one another’s hand – fair play is in action!

” Danny you led by example – great mate! Charlotte and Callum you linked up brilliantly to put a brilliant shift in and well done to Jacob – I saw some good strong tackling. So, the positives are after going down 3 – 0 and clawing our back to draw 3 – 3 that was my favourite game! So team, I could not be more proud of our Titans family. We lose together and win together. Stuff to work on – but well done team! ”

When the dust had settled on the 12 games, and with each team having played 10 games, Hornets Yellow hold the narrowest of leads over Sheffield FC Blue, with Mansfield Town just five points further back. Barton Vikings have an impressive 13 points, with Bradford Amber on 10, new boys Eckington on 7, and those brave, battling Titans on 4.

Bradford City Ambers Coach Paul Jubb told us: –

” Well done to the under 16’s Ambers! They only had 5 players again but played  3 x 20 minute games. They lost the 1st game to top of the table Hillsborough Hornets Disability FC 6 – 3 with goals from Shane, Saad & Harrison. In the second game they beat Mansfield Town Ability Counts Football Club 5 – 2 with goals from Shane 2, Saad 2, Harrison.

The last game was an amazing end to end game against Barton Inclusive 7 – 5.  Every time we scored they got 1 back, but we proved too strong in the end! Tyler hat trick 3, Shane 2, Saad 2. Thank you again to David for coaching the team (maybe one week he’ll take a team photo). Ha!

Bradford team coach Vicky summed up a great afternoon for Bradford City Blues: –

“ What a fantastic day of football. I am super proud of all the players today, ” Vicky said.  “ Bradford City DFC Blues 6 – 3 Hillsborough. Maisie Dennison was in goal and despite the anxiety being there, saved some cracking attempts at goal.
Dylan -1 Aron-1 Noah – 2 Thomas – 1 fantastic goals boys; you pressed on and showed some fantastic team playing! Liam did amazingly well and blocked the ball from goal quite a few times. He was very nervous but fit into the team very well. ”

“ Bradford City DFC Blues 3 – 6 Chesterfield. Massive well done guys you kept your heads up and played on!
Dylan -1 Aron – 2, you boys learned to play together and pushed on even whilst getting disheartened -fantastic team effort boys.

Liam very well done, you tried your hardest and carried on and you played well. It’s not easy to overcome nerves, but be proud of yourself for returning to the pitch and playing your part within the team.
Noah congratulations on player of the day you showed true persistence and resilience today and you did it through anxiety and disheartenment! You got on with the job at hand so be proud of yourself. ”

In the Under-12’s Premier Division, there were six matches on Pitch 3, expertly officiated by Brian. In the early matches, Sheffield Red took two wins over Hornets Orange and Mansfield Town, before Hornets White edged Mansfield Town in a thrilling game. Next, Hornets Orange beat Titans Blue. Phil Siddons watched the match for www.southyorkshireabilitycountsleague.com.”

” Both teams set off well, ” Phil explained, “ Hornets ended up scoring 2 goals then Titans got a free kick which was taken by James to make it 2 – 1. Andrew pulled off some good saves to keep Titans in the game but just before half time Hornets made it 3 – 1 with a quick break as Titans were pushing for a second.
Hornets started of quick in the second half making it 4 – 1. Better second half for the Titans, they started to press them but as Titans pressed it left gaps for Hornets. Andrew kept his performance up, but Hornets came back strong to make the end result 6 – 1 to Hornets. ”

Bradford City Diamonds enjoyed a fine win over Hornets White before Titans Blue were back in action against Bradford City Diamonds.
“ It was a good game, ” Phil admitted. “ Bradford started strong and continued throughout the game. Titans battled on giving their best but lost 7 – 0 to a strong Bradford team. ”

Those two wins for Bradford City Diamonds keep them unbeaten and six points clear of Sheffield FC Red. Hornets have ten points from three wins, and they are level with Mansfield Town who have an identical record. Hornets Orange are just a point further behind, with Titans battling hard for a deserved point or two.

Reflecting on a great day for Bradford City Diamonds, coach Sara told us, “ what a fantastic day of football for the Under 12 Diamonds, the team work was tremendous. ”

Bradford City Diamonds vs Hillsborough Hornets White 8 – 1, with goals from Patrick 3, Blake 2, Talha 2 and Noah 1; then we beat  Doncaster Titans 6 – 0, with Patrick 2, Talha 2, Blake 1, Noah 1 on the scoresheet. ”

Player of the day goes to Patrick for playing some fantastic footy and a special mention to our goalie Callum who was supportive and encouraging, to not just his own team, but those of other teams too.
All my players made me so proud today, fantastic team. Sara (coach).

Edenthorpe Under 12’s got the action under way with a thrilling win over Mansfield Town, before Mansfield stayed on Pitch 6 to face Club Doncaster Titans Red, watched by Steph Hall.

“ This was a really good game played by both teams, ” Steph reported. “ This was end to end and both teams created lots of chances. CDT got the breakthrough first after Zach passed the ball across the box and Bella finished from close range. CDT shortly got a second after Bella shot from outside the box, the keeper saved then Bella scored on the rebound. Both teams continued creating chances, but CDT held onto the lead at half time. Mansfield scored two quick goals after halftime to bring the game level. Both teams continued creating chances and it was still end to end. CDT took the lead again after Zach passed to Bella who did a good finish. CDT scored again after Ben did a brilliant pass through the middle to Alex who then dribbled and scored from outside the box. CDT created many chances, but the Chesterfield goalkeeper did some brilliant saves to keep us out. Chesterfield then extended their lead with a stunning goal scored from their own half. Children’s Hospital fundraiser closes in on an amazing £2500

Dry, cold weather, big crowds, goals galore and plenty of great football. All the usual ingredients were in place for another fantastic afternoon of www.southyorkshireabilitycountsleague.com 5-a-side football at the Goals Centre, Doncaster last Sunday (7th January) as the second half of the Juniors season got underway with 32 fixtures across the four pitches.

There were 245 goals across the 32 games at an average of 7.65 goals per game. Trust us!

As usual, our website editor Margaret Gregory pulled together the pictures and action from all four divisions.

It was the final bucket collection of the South Yorks ACL’s Christmas fundraising campaign in support of the Ryegate Centre at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. The £90 raised took the campaign ever closer to its revised target of £2500 – a fantastic effort from everyone involved with the League, and its supporters. The Just Giving site, which can be found on our website, will close after the current round of fixtures across all three divisions at the end of January. Thanks to everyone for their amazing generosity!

So, to the action, and in the Premier Division, refereed by Phil out on Pitch 10, Club Doncaster Titans got the afternoon under way against Hillsborough Hornets Yellow, watched by Titan’s John Hibbert.

“ In our first game against Hillsborough Hornets, we played really well and were strong, ” John told us. “ We kept it to 0 – 0 at half time. Then in the second half they scored, and we started to lose focus and our heads. We kept battling on but lost 4 – 0 ”

After Mansfield Town had taken three points with a win over Eckington Boys, Titans were involved in a thriller with Sheffield FC Blue. “ In our second game against Sheffield FC, we started strongly,” John continued. “We defended really well, but then they scored and again we lost our heads. Then Devon scored to make it 4 – 1 at half time. I don’t know where we got our resilience, but we clawed our way back. Marley scored to make it 4 – 2 but then Brooklyn produced a bit of brilliance and scored his first goal for the team (Marley scored his first as well) so at end of the game it ended up Sheffield 4  Titans 3 but what a game. ” Well done everyone today – you all played brilliantly. You gave me 110% and I could not have asked anymore of my team. ”

“ We have stuff to work on at the training ground especially trying to keep our heads when losing and picking ourselves up and getting in front again, so we have to build on our mental state so we can keep our heads;  but enjoyed today. ”

After Eckington Boys had edged a close battle with Bradford City Amber, Barton Inclusive Tigers and Hillsborough Hornets served up a quite extraordinary 12 – goal draw, watched by Chris and Jo Newby from Barton.

“ We started well,  playing one touch passes and took the lead through Brandon. HH equalised soon after, but Baileys goal and Brandon scoring again put us 3 – 1 up. HH rallied and we got to the interval 3 apiece. The second half was nip and tuck, with some fantastic rearguard action from the team playing as a unit, but a special shoutout to James, Bailey (who had dropped back into defence) and today’s powerhouse keeper Thomas. Every time we got our noses in front we got pegged back. Brandon completed his hattrick and Lennon got his first goal on his League debut game. Locked at 5 all going into the last minute, HH scored a penalty to lead for the first time before the super twins knuckled down to get the ball down the pitch where  Bailey fired one home with barely any time for a restart.

The game ended 6 – 6. These were the first points Hillsborough Hornets have dropped this season and last season. ”

Hornets were edged out in a seven goal thriller with Mansfield Town, then Sheffield FC Blue took a single goal win over Bradford City Amber.

Barton Tigers took on Eckington Boys in the next match. Here are Jo and Chris from Barton;

“We started this game well with Elliot making his league debut, settling well into the back line, making some crucial interventions, we raced into a 3 – 1 lead with Brandon getting another hattrick. Thomas made an incredible double save to keep us 2 ahead. Kasper bombed forward from his defensive role, was put through by Brandon and tucked away his first goal of the season. Brandon scored yet again, and we ended the half 5 – 2 up. A sluggish start to the second half and Eckington used their numerical advantage to reduce the arrears to 5 – 4. Lennon, playing for the team, was tracking back to steady the teetering ship before Kasper then took the initiative and started picking Eckington apart with his passing from the back, feeding the super striker twins. Brandon added another two goals to his haul of 9 for the day. We closed the game out and finished 7 – 4 winners. ”

Mansfield defeated Sheffield before Barton took the three points in the final game against a depleted Bradford City Amber.

At the end of the afternoon, it is incredibly competitive at the top of the table. Hornets still lead the Premier Division, but by only one point from Sheffield FC Blue, by three from Mansfield and by six from Barton who made a big move on the day with seven points from a possible nine.

Eckington have six points, Bradford City Amber four and Titans three.

Second Juniors Matchday of 2023/4 season at Goals Doncaster

Hundred-per-cent Hornets set early Under-16 Premier Division pace.

Perfect Bradford City Blues maintain fine Under-16 Championship start.

Unbeaten Bradford City Diamonds stretch Under 12’s Premier advantage.

Bradford City Greens and Edenthorpe Juniors Share Under-12’s Championship lead.

Not a bad day at Doncaster Goals Centre last Sunday as the usual excellent crowds watched the second matchday of the South Yorkshire Ability Counts Junior Leagues 2023/4 season.

If you couldn’t make it, our www.southyorkshireabilitycountsleague.com editor, Margaret Gregory, sent her intrepid reporting team off to Doncaster with pencils and notepads to bring you the best of the action.

First of a whopping 39 games across all four divisions saw new guys Eckington Boys take three points in a narrow win over Club Doncaster Titans. “So, I can’t give an accurate report,” Titan’s John Hibbert told us, “ I was told we played well but we lost 2-1.”

A quick turnaround for Titans saw them lose a thrilling encounter with Mansfield Town “Titans 3 Mansfield 5 was how it ended up” John told us” The goals were scored  by Marley, Devon and Mohammed. Marley and Ryan swapped in goal. Marley got injured tackling for the ball, then Ryan got injured trying to save the ball, so we had to put Devon in goal.”

After Hillsborough Hornets (Yellow) had taken three points from their game with Eckington, Barton Inclusive Hull Tigers got their afternoon under way.

“BIFC Hull Tigers first game today was against Mansfield Town Ability Counts U16’s Barton’s Jo and Chris told www.SyorksACL. “ We raced into a 4-0 lead.  Brandon and Bailey used their ‘twins Bluetooth’ to link up and Brandon claimed a hattrick and one assist while Bailey got one goal and three assists at the turn. This allowed the opposition to bring on an extra player which brought Mansfield back to 4-3. We saw great defensive displays from Harry, Tom and George aided by goalkeeper Kasper. With the extra player going off we held on to the lead to run out 4-3 winners.”

Hornets (Yellow) marched on with a win over Bradford City (Amber), summed up for us by Bradford’s Paul Jubb. ” It was a hard day for Bradford City DFC Under 16’s Ambers,” Paul admitted. “We played the top 2 teams in the league and narrowly lost to both. In the first  game we played Hillsborough Hornets Disability FC in a hard game, they scored 1st then we got 1 back from Tyler, only for them to score again. Eesa brought the game back to 2 – 2 but in the second half they scored 2 more goals to win the game.”

“ The second game  was closer, end to end,” Paul added. “ First Sheffield FC scoring, then us getting one back.  Sheffield FC came out winners 5 – 4 goals from Saad 2 Eesa1 & Tyler.

Our Player of the day was Eesa!”

“Thanks to Kelly James Anderton for managing the team on the day!”

After Sheffield Blue had taken all three points from Eckington Boys to add to that win over Bradford City Amber before Barton Hull Tigers faced table-topping Hillsborough Hornets Yellow.

“The second game was against Hillsborough Hornets, who won every league game last season,” Barton’s Jo and Chris told us. “ This was a great game for the neutral. Every time we took the lead due to our super twins the Hornets would peg us back.  We managed to get a 2 goal cushion going into the 2nd half 5 – 3. Hillsborough cranked up the pressure and through some fantastic long range shooting went into a 7 – 5 lead,  albeit goalie Tom diving and saving the many of their thunderbolts. We managed to score again to reduce the arrears but ran out of time before we could push for the equaliser.”

So, after four games each for most sides, it’s Hillsborough Hornets who set the pace in the Premier Division, with 4 wins out of 4. Sheffield FC Blue have three wins and nine points. Mansfield Town and Bradford City Amber have four points each, and Eckington, Barton Hull and Club Doncaster Titans all have one win in what promises to be a competitive division.

Into the Under-16’s Championship, then, and Chesterfield FC Community Trust got the action under way with a win over Rotherham United Community Sports Trust. Chesterfield stayed on field and took the points in defeating Mansfield Town, before Rotherham CST overcame Sheffield FC Black.

Next up, Bradford City Blue, and their coach Vicky summed up their three matches during the afternoon.

“Bradford City Blues 6 – 0 Mansfield,” Vicky reported. “Jonathan scored 4 goals in a  fantastic start, and Alfie scored 2 goals, both  absolute belters. Dylan was fantastic in the goals keeping a clean sheet; you all got stuck in, but also took into consideration the other teams feelings respectfully!!”

“ In our next game Bradford City Blues beat Sheffield FC Black 8 – 3,“ Vicky went on. “A shout out to Maisie – very well done on scoring your first goal. May I add she’s in defence, so it was totally pulled out of the bag! I wanted to run and high five her (I didn’t as that would have been disrespectful)!”

“Dylan scored 4 goals, well done you soldiered on and walked away from conflict, and Alfie  scored, constantly pushing forward; Alex was on fire in defence and attack ,scoring two goals.”

“In our final game Bradford City Blues beat Hillsborough Hornets Black 3-1.” Vicky went on, “Thomas scored his first goal playing with us, he tried so hard and didn’t give up!! Alex scored a goal and Jonathan scored a goal. Thankyou Alfie and Alex for taking turns in the goal in the last match – you did fantastic !”

“Congratulations to Alex Viemans for player of the day, “ Vicky summed up. “What a good day all round I’m super proud of you all – parents be proud!”

Rotherham United CST took the win in the last Division game over Hornets Black.

After four games, it’s Vicky’s Bradford City Blues who lead the way with four wins from four games. Rotherham CST and Chesterfield FC Community Trust are chasing hard with nine points each. Hornets have three, with Sheffield FC Black and Mansfield Town looking to get off the mark ahead of Christmas.

In the Under-12’sPremier Division Club Doncaster Titans got the Division under way with two consecutive games, watched by Titans John Hibbert.

“ In our first game against Hillsborough Hornets Orange we played well, but then they started to get a foothold in the game, so they started to play their game,” John admitted. “Rowan played really well, and Andrew played out of his skin – he couldn’t have done any better. Henry you played well, James you did brilliantly and not to mention the engine of the team Zac: you were everywhere mate, you all gave 100% -so well done. Well done every player today you were a credit to coach Phil.”

“Our second game was against Mansfield Town, “ John continued. “We played well at the beginning; we were holding our own, so first they scored then James scored a cracker then they scored again then Zac scored a goal by beating his marker. Then they scored again, and our heads started to drop again but everyone put a brilliant shift in today. At the end of the day, we did what all Titans do and that was kept going so well done Titans today.”

U12 Championship

Club Doncaster Titans Red

“We didn’t give up – maybe next time will be our time,” John summed up. “Back to the training ground.”

After Hornets Orange took bragging rights with a win over Hornets White, and Hornets White were defeated by Sheffield FC Red, Bradford City Diamonds completed a splendid afternoon with two very fine wins.

“ It was another fantastic day for Bradford Under 12’s Diamonds in the  South Yorkshire Ability Counts League today, winning both games,” Coach Sara told www.southyorkshireabilitycountsleague.com

“Diamonds beat Mansfield 9 – 0 having had to reduce players and playing 2-touch football, then beat Sheffield FC Red 4 – 3. I was very happy with the team’s performances. Great saves from Fabian, supportive sportsmanship from Patrick, some great teamwork in assists and shooting from Harris, Aron and Patrick. Fantastic defence between Kayden and Talha who also scored a cheeky goal and played a great game against Sheffield which earned him player of the day.”

“Well done to all my players for great football, listening, teamwork and showing great resilience, “ Sara concluded.

Sara’s Bradford City Diamonds take a one hundred per cent record into December’s fixtures and in doing so take a five-point advantage to Matchday Three. Hornets Orange and Sheffield Red have six points, Hornets White four, and John’s brave Titans battle on to the next time, and hopefully, a win.

There were eight games in the Under-12’s Championship. After Chesterfield Community Trust had beaten Sheffield White, Rotherham United Community Sports Trust lost their first game to Sheffield FC White. Edenthorpe beat Mansfield Town FC before Bradford FC Greens took the field for two fixtures, summed up by Bradford City’s Paul Jubb.

“Bradford City DFC Green had 2 good wins on the day playing some great football,” Paul told us. “ The Greens beat Sheffield FC 5 – 1 through goals scored by Daniel (2 ), Jake (2 ) and Oscar. The Greens then beat Edenthorpe 4 – 1 , with goals from Jake (2) and Oscar (2)”

“Our Captain today was Jake, and our player of the day was Daniel,” Paul told us.

Club Doncaster Titans enjoyed a great day with two good wins, summed up for us by Titans Steph Hall.

“The match against Rotherham United was a good game played by both teams,” Steph reported. “It was end to end and both teams created many chances. The goalkeepers did some brilliant saves to keep their teams in the game. In the end Ben did a long pass up to Zak who went on to score and win the game for CDT Red. Players from both teams should be proud of themselves for playing the game in the right way!”

“The second game against Sheffield FC White was a brilliant game played in the right way by both teams,” Steph told us. “CDT Reds started the game strongly creating many chances. CDT went ahead when Lauren passed to Alex who scored from outside the box. CDT quickly got a second when Ben did a long pass up to Zak who controlled it and scored.  Sheffield started to settle and come back into the game creating many chances. Sheffield scored two quick lovely team goals to get the score level. They then scored two more before half time. CDT went into half time behind. Shortly into the second half Sheffield scored their fifth goal of the game. CDT continued playing the right way and created some good chances. CDT attacked quickly, Zak passed the ball to Lauren who dribbled into the box and scored from close range! CDT quickly scored another when Ben did a brilliant long pass to set Zak through on goal who then finished brilliantly. CDT soon got the score level when Lauren had several shots on target, passed to Alex who then equalised from close range! Both teams continued creating chances and anyone could have won the game. CDT won the ball in midfield, Alex did a lovely long pass through Sheffield’s defence, Lauren controlled the ball dribbled and scored a fantastic goal into the bottom corner to put CDT ahead in the game! Both teams continued creating chances, but CDT held on for their first win of the season!”

“ Players from both teams should be proud of how they played the game in the right way and how they were respectful to each other,” Steph concluded. Bradford City Green and Edenthorpe Juniors lead the way in the Under-12’s Championship with 12 points each from 5 games. Chesterfield have 7, Titans Red six, Mansfield Town 4 and Sheffield White 3, with Rotherham still fighting for that first win.

Bradford City Amber early leaders in the Under-16’s Premier Division

Hope you all had a great Summer and are ready to go for another frantic Ability Counts season.

Plenty of familiar faces and some new ones too as the South Yorkshire Ability Counts League got its season under way with a thrilling afternoon of Under-12 and Under-16 football at a dull but dry Goals Centre in Doncaster last Sunday (1st October). As usual, and with no expense spared, we sent our fearless team of match reporters off to Donny to feed back the best of the action to the watchful eye of our Yorks ACL Website Editor, Margaret Gregory.

The League welcomed two new clubs; Edenthorpe Juniors and Mansfield Town Ability Counts FC. It was actually more of a welcome back to Mansfield, who had participated previously in the SYACL as Sherwood Forest.

The League had also adopted the FA’s “no heading” trial for its two Under 12’s divisions, and extended its best wishes to Mike Stylianou and Margaret Gregory who’d been through hip and knee operations respectively over the summer. Both are on the mend and should be available for selection soon.

In the Under 12’s Championship, League newcomers Edenthorpe got life in the SYACL off to a fantastic start with three wins from their three games. Their Vice Chairman Mark Greenwood  described their two wins over Club Doncaster Titans and Bradford City Greens.

“The match with Club Doncaster Titans was our first ever game and the boys were very nervous and excited at the same time,” Mark told us. “They didn’t know what to expect but we thank Club Doncaster for being lovely at helping us settle in.  The game kicked off and there was plenty of running for Edenthorpe but Club Doncaster striker struck first.  It was a very competitive game with high work rate from Henry and Tristan and Max doing a good job of leading the line.  At half time we swapped keepers and this seemed to reinvigorate Edenthorpe and Finley’s energy led to a number of goals securing the win, this was despite a number of excellent saves from the Club Doncaster goalkeeper.”

“Our second match with Bradford Greens was a more difficult game for Edenthorpe playing with a player less on the pitch,” Mark continued. “Despite that they went in to the lead at half following  a lot of running and great work from the team.  Henry took his turn in goal and was doing a great job for the team.  The Second half was very different ; Edenthorpe’s energy levels had dropped and Bradford’s extra player was starting to tell. They got a goal back.  At this point it became a defensive line that cleared the ball away in order to protect our goal.  In the end Bradford were unable to break down the defence and the Edenthorpe players walked off happy – but very tired from their hard work.”

After a convincing win over Mansfield Town, Bradford’s Paul Jubb commented, “some great goals from Damian and Jake gave the Greens a first win in their first game of the season.”

“In our feisty second game, Edenthorpe – despite only having 3 players most of the game – did really well to win the game; Chloe played well and won player of the day,” Paul added. “Thanks as always to all the coaches and volunteers, and to the league for organising the games!”

Doncaster Titans’ Steph Hall watched her club’s matches for http://www.syorksacl.com.

“ Our first match was against Chesterfield and  was a very good game played by both teams. The game was fast paced and was end to end,” Steph reported, “with both teams creating lots of chances. Chesterfield scored a few times to take the lead. CDT pulled one back from close range through Alex after Lauren passed to him. Chesterfield replied with a couple more goals. The game stayed wide open, and the comeback was on. After some good pressure Bella scored after Alex passed to her. CDT continued to create chances with some fantastic build up play by the team. CDT got a free kick in an impossible angle, but Alex took it and scored! Chesterfield scored a couple more and held on for the win. Proud of the team with how they tried their best and gave it a good go”.

“Our second match with Edenthorpe Juniors  was another good game played by both the teams. Both teams started strongly and created many chances,” Steph continued, “Edenthorpe took the lead but after some good play CDT drew level. Bella passed to Alex who scored from outside the box. Both teams continued to press, Ben did a great clearance which went up to Alex who dribbled the ball and scored to put CDT in the lead. Edenthorpe quickly went up the other end and equalised. Near the end of the first half CDT attacked quickly with Alex who passed to Bella who put CDT ahead. The second half was similar, both teams created many chances but both goalkeepers did some brilliant saves to keep their teams in the game. Near the end Edenthorpe scored a couple of quick fire goals to secure the win. Proud of the team with how they were more settled in the game, encouraged each other and worked as a team.”

So, after their first matchday, Edenthorpe have a three point lead over Bradford Greens with Chesterfield FC Community Trust in third after their win over Club Doncaster Titans and a draw with Mansfield Town, who are fourth.

In the Under-12’s Premiership, each of the six clubs played two matches. Bradford set the early pace, much to the delight of Paul Jubb, who commented on their convincing wins over Sheffield FC and Hillsborough Hornets.

Bradford City Under 12s Diamonds

“Well what a cracking start to the season for the under 12 Diamonds winning both their games today, all played fantastically as a team. Every single one of you were awesome, thoughtful, great at following instructions and well mannered.”

“Even the ref commented on how wonderful the players on our team were. Keep it up You guys!!!”

“Some fantastic goalkeeping from Callum who’s moved up this year,” Paul added, “as well as a great attitude which is what won him the player of the day trophy. Well done!!”

Phil Siddons saw his Titans Blues team start their season with two hard-fought, narrow defeats to Hornets and Sheffield Red. “In our game with CDT Blue vs Hillsborough White, Titans won a free kick. James scored from it then Hillsborough took control, but Titans being Titans they battled well, then went 5 vs1. After an unlucky back pass from Hillsborough made it 5 vs 2 then Hillsborough scored 3 more to make it 8 – 2. James scored from an assist from Zak, who  played well for his first game.”

“ I can’t say much about our game with Sheffield Red,” Phil went on, “but Titans kept on battling and James scored.”

So, after their flying start, Bradford lead the way by two points from Hornets White and Mansfield Town, who both have four points. Sheffield Red have three, and it won’t be long before Titans and Hornets Orange get off the mark.

In the Under -16’s Championship, and for a variety of reasons, four results were recorded during the afternoon. Chesterfield took two wins from their matches with Mansfield Town and Hillsborough Hornets Yellow, whilst Hornets took all three points from a win over Sheffield Blue.

Coach Vicky was delighted with her Bradford Diamonds side’s win over Mansfield Town. “Some great teamwork lead to a comfortable win against new team Mansfield,” Vicky reported. “Well done Jonathan 3 goals Noah & Alfie 1 each.”

“We are absolutely well and truly proud of you all today, you played as a team and your behaviour was exceptional!!”

It was an absolute pleasure, well done guys it was tough competition, but you all came out smiling!” Vicky told her players.

Early days then, but it’s Vicky and her Bradford Stars who sit second in the table alongside Hornets.  Chesterfield are top with that one hundred percent record.

And so to the Premier Division and a win and a draw for Bradford City Amber, watched by Paul Jubb.  “Our game with Mansfield 3 – 3 was a great end to end game, both teams playing some great football, with only 5 players on the day, it was hard work, but a draw was a fair result.”

“In our second game with Doncaster Titans, we were down to only 4 players, but the lads played some amazing football,” Paul added. “Every time Doncaster came back, the lads scored another goal.”

“Well played everyone on the day!”

A tough day at the office for Barton Town after their journey west.  Jo and Chris summed up Titan’s two matches for www.southyorkshireabilitycountsleague.com.

“A typical autumnal South Yorkshire afternoon in Doncaster saw us begin our 2023/2024 SYACL campaign. With Chris still at the helm but Heather now away at University we brought our new assistant coach Steve to his first Inclusive league game. Steve’s grandson James makes his league debut along with our female addition to the team ‘I’. As Kai has moved on to the adult team Kasper debuts as the new captain and finds himself stepping into nets to cover for our ill GK Harvey,” Jo and Chris told us ..

“ In game one against Sheffield FC, we started slowly  and Sheffield took the lead before we found our rhythm which resulted in a couple of goals for Bailey and one for his twin brother Brandon. Harry also scored his first goal for BIFC Hull from the spot, showing no nerves and dispatching it with great aplomb. Then Sheffield got into their groove scoring three times to bring us to the turn at 4 – 4. The second half began as the first had finished with the tide turning to Sheffield who scored another 4 before we grabbed a late consolation to finish the game 5 – 8.”

“In our second game with Doncaster Titans, the first half was fairly even, the stand out player of the half being the Titans goalkeeper whose positioning and handling kept us at bay,” Jo and Chris explained. “We finished the half 2 – 0 down. We made a number of tactical adjustments to chase the game, which worked well to begin with as goals from Brandon and Bailey brought us back level at 2-2. We kept going forwards to try and get the go-ahead goal, getting close a number of times including hitting the crossbar. Whilst pushing forwards, we got caught on the counter attack, twice, before Bailey grabbed another with virtually the last kick of the game with a 4-3 win for Titans.”

“We awarded PoM to Harry after his penalty goal injected him with a new found confidence and the rest of the day he played with real fire in his belly. All the players and their families thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the everyone displayed the same respectful behaviours that saw us gain so many respect points last season.”

John Hibbert summed up the afternoon from a Titans’ perspective.

“ Against Barton we started strongly but then Devon scored our first goal, then Danny scored our second goal, then Jacob scored his first goal for Titans, making it 3 – 0, then they got back in the game.” John explained. “They pulled one back 3 – 1, then all of a sudden they got a foothold in the game and they scored again 3 – 2; then they scored again so now we were drawing 3 – 3. Charlotte  tackled two players and beat them and took a shot and scored, but she didn’t think it was in when everyone was celebrating her goal. “ She was surprised that it went in, but she played outstanding today, looking after new players and covering positions so a big thank you to her!”

“ Marley was playing his first matches for Titans and made some incredible saves,” John continued, “and welcome to the team for Jacob and Callum – so in the end we won 4 – 3!”

“ In our second game with Bradford we started well at first, then they scored first but we pulled one back, however they scored again,“ John reported. “Then it started to be a one sided game, so I’m not going to say much about it – we lost.”

“We lost our perspective on the game and we started to lose control so we need to support each other, but I was proud of my new team. We have stuff to work on so we will treat this as a training game, pick ourselves up and train harder. We won a game and lost a game.”

“ So onwards and upwards – see everyone next week.“

So, after one matchday, Bradford City Ambers head the way with four points from a win and a draw. As you have just read, John Hibbert’s Titans shared second spot with Sheffield Blue and  Hornets Yellow.
